  2. BIBLE AUTHORITY EXPEDIENT, INCIDENTAL or VIOLATION?

  3. EXPEDIENT, INCIDENTAL or VIOLATION? I. PATTERN OF AUTHORITY (2 Tim. 1:13). A. Three Ways Expressed: 1. Commands (Mt. 28:20). 2. Apr. Examples (John 13:15). 3. Nec. Inference (Mt. 22:31-32). Necessary Inference is just as authoritative as a command!

  4. EXPEDIENT, INCIDENTAL or VIOLATION? I. PATTERN OF AUTHORITY (2 Tim. 1:13). B. Expedient (1 Cor. 8:9; 10:23). 1. It must be a “liberty” & “lawful”. 2. It must be “edifying”. 3. NOT merely convenient! C. Incidental: lights & place (Ax 20:8). Optional, subordinate / dependent upon something greater (General Authority)

  5. EXPEDIENT, INCIDENTAL or VIOLATION? I. PATTERN OF AUTHORITY (2 Tim. 1:13). D. Violation (1 Cor. 4:6; 1 John 3:4). Goes beyond, transgresses, contradicts truth . GENERIC Authority vs. NO Authority

  6. EXPEDIENT, INCIDENTAL or VIOLATION? II. GIVING 1. “Give as prospered” (1 Cor. 16:2). 2. “First day of the week”(1 Cor. 16:2). A. EXPEDIENT: Timing of collection during services, Container, etc. B. INCIDENTAL: 1. Draw interest (bank acct)? 2. If sell building, can we make a profit? 3. Can we finalize sale on MONDAY? These do not change our purpose (John 2:13-16).

  7. EXPEDIENT, INCIDENTAL or VIOLATION? II. GIVING 1. “Give as prospered” (1 Cor. 16:2). 2. “First day of the week”(1 Cor. 16:2). C. VIOLATION: 1. Tithe, Bake Sale, Car Washes, etc. 2. Collection on Monday, Tuesday, Etc. Other ways & Other Days!

  8. EXPEDIENT, INCIDENTAL or VIOLATION? III. ASSEMBLING 1. “Forsake not…” (Heb. 10:25). 2. “First day of the week”(1 Cor. 16:2). 3. Other days of meeting (Acts 2:46). A. EXPEDIENT: 1. Place: Buy, Rent, Lease, Use House… 2. Time of day.

  9. EXPEDIENT, INCIDENTAL or VIOLATION? III. ASSEMBLING 1. “Forsake not…” (Heb. 10:25). 2. “First day of the week”(1 Cor. 16:2). 3. Other days of meeting (Acts 2:46). B. INCIDENTAL: 1. Bathrooms, Water Fountains, Padded Pews, AC & Heating, Lights, Fans… C. VIOLATION: 1. NOT meeting on Sunday or other agreed upon times (Eph.5:21; Heb.13:17).

  10. EXPEDIENT, INCIDENTAL or VIOLATION? IV. USE OF FUNDS (Phil. 4:15-18; 2 Cor. 8:16-24). A. EXPEDIENT: 1. Cash, check, money order… 2. Timing (weekly, monthly) & amount. B. INCIDENTAL: 1. Use post office, Federal Express, etc. 2. Support truth - Teaching material. 3. Needy saints – Food, clothing, housing.

  11. EXPEDIENT, INCIDENTAL or VIOLATION? IV. USE OF FUNDS (Phil. 4:15-18; 2 Cor. 8:16-24). C. VIOLATION: 1. Sitting on the funds – doing nothing. 2. Give through another organization (Phil. 4:15-18; Acts 11:30).

  12. EXPEDIENT, INCIDENTAL or VIOLATION? V. LORD’S SUPPER (1 Cor. 11:17-34; Acts 20:7). A. EXPEDIENT: 1. One or Many cups. (Which is more sanitary?). 2. Timing on Sunday, am & pm offering. B. INCIDENTAL: 1. Brand of bread / juice, home made. 2. Type of tray.

  13. EXPEDIENT, INCIDENTAL or VIOLATION? V. LORD’S SUPPER (1 Cor. 11:17-34; Acts 20:7). C. VIOLATION: 1. Not partaking. 2. Taking a different day. 3. Changing the emblems.

  14. EXPEDIENT, INCIDENTAL or VIOLATION? V. PURPOSE OF THE CHURCH (1 Cor. 11:34; 2 Tim. 3:15). A. EXPEDIENT: 1. Make clear distinctions. 2. Use building for worship & Bible study. B. INCIDENTAL: 1. Working at bldg – eat while here. 2. Socializing before or after services.

  15. EXPEDIENT, INCIDENTAL or VIOLATION? V. PURPOSE OF THE CHURCH (1 Cor. 11:34; 2 Tim. 3:15). C. VIOLATION: 1. Using building for social events, entertainment, meals, etc. (i.e. a different purpose). CONCLUSION: There Is A Pattern To Follow (2 Tim. 1:13).
