  2. What Does God Say About Dating? Intro: a. Dating is a relatively modern practice. b. Other times & places had arranged marriages, formal courtships, etc. c. Is the Bible relevant today? Does it apply to dating? While circumstances change, people have not (Gen. 3:6; 1 John 2:16).

  3. What Does God Say About Dating? I. DANGERS IN DATING a. Often unsupervised… 1. A child left to himself (Prov. 29:15). 2. Even if your child knows what is right, what about the one they are dating? 3. Being alone with another is not wise: Tamar (2 Sam. 13:7-15). Jr. HS girl date raped in a car. Even just rumors can be horrible!

  4. What Does God Say About Dating? I. DANGERS IN DATING b. Youthful passions can mislead (2 Tim. 2:22) “59 percent of marriages for women under the age of 18 end in divorce within 15 years. The divorce rate drops to 36 percent for those married at age 20 or older." "Cohabitation, Marriage, Divorce and Remarriage in the United States," M.D. Bramlett and W.D. Mosher

  5. What Does God Say About Dating? I. DANGERS IN DATING c. Not being grounded in faith (Col. 1:23). - Not taught (2 Pet. 3:16) - Not given proper example (Mt. 18:6): “Children of divorce have a higher risk of divorce when they marry, and an even higher risk if the person they marry comes from a divorced home." Journal of Marriage and the Family

  7. What Does God Say About Dating? I. DANGERS IN DATING d. Low standards / expectations - What purpose in dating (Eph. 5:22-33)? Just emotions, fun, looks, excitement? Consider spiritual consequences? Looking for a life-long companion, one to help you get to heaven? e. Intimacy without commitment - Fornication (Gal. 5:19 vs Gen. 29:18-20) - Lasciviousness (Gal. 5:19) Indecent movements/handling, making out, touching

  8. What Does God Say About Dating? I. DANGERS IN DATING f. Confuse martial behaviors with dating… - “We intend to get married.” - “We love each other.” - “Try before you buy.” - These do not change fornication or lasciviousness into something pure! - In fact these make a lasting & happy marriage less likely!

  9. What Does God Say About Dating? I. DANGERS IN DATING g. Studies show… that premarital sex undermines marriage. - “Research indicates that people who live together prior to getting married are more likely to have marriages that end in divorce." The Boston Herald

  10. What Does God Say About Dating? I. DANGERS IN DATING g. Studies show… constant breaking of relationships not healthy for commitment - Studies show that those who start dating at 12 tend to be involved in sex outside of marriage more so than those who start dating at 18. - Studies show that those who divorce once, are more likely to get divorced a second time.

  11. What Does God Say About Dating? II. BE SPIRITUALLY MATURE FIRST! a. Put God first (Matt. 6:33), do not be desperate. b. Do not make opportunity for the flesh (Rom. 13:14), be strong against sin. c. Understand the difference between true love & lust (1 Cor. 13:4-7, 2 Tim. 2:22). d. Be mature enough to forsake all others (Eph. 5:31), understand the purpose & place of marriage. e. Flee danger (2 Tim. 2:22; Gen. 39:12)! It may sometimes ambush you!
