  1. 2 Samuel 22

  2. 2 Samuel 22A Song or a Psalm

  3. A Song or a Psalm? • (2 Sam 22:1 NKJV) Then David spoke to the LORD the words of this song, on the day when the LORD had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.

  4. A Song or a Psalm? • This song, which is found with scarcely any material variation as Ps. 18, and with the words of this first verse for its title, belongs to the early part of David’s reign when he was recently established upon the throne of all Israel, and when his final triumph over the house of Saul, and over the pagan nations 2Sa_22:44-46, Philistines, Moabites, Syrians, Ammonites, and Edomites, was still fresh 2 Sam. 21. -- Albert Barnes

  5. A Song or a Psalm? • (2 Sam 22:1 NKJV) Then David spoke to the LORD the words of this song, on the day when the LORD had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. • (Psa 18:1 NKJV) I will love You, O LORD, my strength. This verse doesn’t match well, but there are many similarities. In the chapter

  6. They are very smiliar • (2 Sam 22:2 NKJV) And he said: "The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; • (Psa 18:2 NKJV) The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

  7. Verses do not match exactly, but many of the thoughts do match. • (2 Sam 22:3 NKJV) The God of my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, My stronghold and my refuge; My Savior, You save me from violence. • (Psa 18:2 NKJV) The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

  8. What about the Psalms? • Some of them are in books of the Bible, other than the Psalms. • One thing that makes them special is David’s diligence at expressing his profound thankfulness to God. • He gives so many details of his thanks and his feelings. • He says things we can identify with

  9. The God of my strength • (2 Sam 22:3 NKJV) The God of my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, My stronghold and my refuge; My Savior, You save me from violence.

  10. Made into a Song we Sing • (2 Sam 22:4 NKJV) I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies.

  11. The floods of ungodliness • (2 Sam 22:5 NKJV) 'When the waves of death surrounded me, The floods of ungodliness made me afraid.

  12. Comment on 2 Samuel 22:5 • “When the waves of death compassed me –” Though in a primary sense many of these things belong to David, yet generally and fully they belong to the Messiah alone. -- Adam Clarke

  13. Jesus said the Psalms spoke of Him • (Luke 24:44 NKJV) Then He said to them, "These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me."

  14. David or Christ? • (2 Sam 22:6 NKJV) The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me.

  15. To Whom is the Prophet referring? • (Acts 8:34 NKJV) So the eunuch answered Philip and said, "I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?"

  16. David was delivered from his enemies • (2 Sam 22:7 NKJV) In my distress I called upon the LORD, And cried out to my God; He heard my voice from His temple, And my cry entered His ears.

  17. Is this Christ or David? • (2 Sam 22:8 NKJV) "Then the earth shook and trembled; The foundations of heaven quaked and were shaken, Because He was angry.

  18. Is this about Christ? • (Mat 27:51-54 NKJV) Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, . . . {54} So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, "Truly this was the Son of God!"

  19. Or is it about David? • “Then the earth shook and trembled “- “In this and the following verses David describes, by the sublimest expressions and grandest terms, the majesty of God, and the awful manner in which he came to his assistance. The representation of the storm in these verses must be allowed by all skillful and impartial judges to be truly sublime and noble, and in the genuine spirit of poetry. -- Adam Clarke

  20. God’s Anger • (2 Sam 22:9 NKJV) Smoke went up from His nostrils, And devouring fire from His mouth; Coals were kindled by it.

  21. Is this Prophecy? • (2 Sam 22:10 NKJV) He bowed the heavens also, and came down With darkness under His feet. • (Mat 27:45 NKJV) Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land.

  22. Is the Simply Poetic Beauty • (2 Sam 22:11 NKJV) He rode upon a cherub, and flew; And He was seen upon the wings of the wind.

  23. Is this from Sinai? • (2 Sam 22:12 NKJV) He made darkness canopies around Him, Dark waters and thick clouds of the skies. • (Exo 20:20-21 NKJV) And Moses said to the people, "Do not fear; for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin." {21} So the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where God was.

  24. Is this just Poetic Praise? • (2 Sam 22:13 NKJV) From the brightness before Him Coals of fire were kindled.

  25. The Thunder • (2 Sam 22:14 NKJV) "The LORD thundered from heaven, And the Most High uttered His voice. • (Exo 19:16 NKJV) Then it came to pass on the third day, in the morning, that there were thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain; and the sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled.

  26. Figurative Language • (2 Sam 22:15 NKJV) He sent out arrows and scattered them; Lightning bolts, and He vanquished them.

  27. Albert Barnes • “And discomfited them” - literally, to impel, to drive; then, to put in commotion or consternation. The allusion is to an army whose order is disturbed, or which is thrown into confusion, and which is, therefore, easily conquered. The idea is that David achieved a victory over all his enemies, as if God had scattered them by a storm and tempest.

  28. God’s complete Control • (2 Sam 22:16 NKJV) Then the channels of the sea were seen, The foundations of the world were uncovered, At the rebuke of the LORD, At the blast of the breath of His nostrils. • The tempest of the air is attended by appropriate results on earth. The language, though not expressive of any special physical changes, represents the utter subversion of the order of nature. Before such a God none can stand. Jamieson, Faussett, & Brown

  29. Do waters = trouble? • (2 Sam 22:17 NKJV) "He sent from above, He took me, He drew me out of many waters. • The meaning here is, that God had rescued him out of the many troubles and dangers that encompassed him, as if he had fallen into the sea and was in danger of perishing. – Albert Barnes

  30. Thanks for His Deliverance! • (2 Sam 22:18 NKJV) He delivered me from my strong enemy, From those who hated me; For they were too strong for me.

  31. Reflecting on troubles? • (2 Sam 22:19 NKJV) They confronted me in the day of my calamity, But the LORD was my support.

  32. More Appreciation • (2 Sam 22:20 NKJV) He also brought me out into a broad place; He delivered me because He delighted in me.

  33. David started out so well! • (2 Sam 22:21 NKJV) "The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; According to the cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me.

  34. I stayed true to God • (2 Sam 22:22 NKJV) For I have kept the ways of the LORD, And have not wickedly departed from my God.

  35. He knew God’s Word • (2 Sam 22:23 NKJV) For all His judgments were before me; And as for His statutes, I did not depart from them. • The 119th Psalm is further commentary on his appreciation for how important it is to know the word of God.

  36. I have tried to do right • (2 Sam 22:24 NKJV) I was also blameless before Him, And I kept myself from my iniquity. • Maybe the meaning: • (2 Sam 22:24 NIV) I have been blameless before him and have kept myself from sin.

  37. God Does Reward Righteousness– in some cases. • (2 Sam 22:25 NKJV) Therefore the LORD has recompensed me according to my righteousness, According to my cleanness in His eyes.

  38. The way we would hope • (2 Sam 22:26 NKJV) "With the merciful You will show Yourself merciful; With a blameless man You will show Yourself blameless;

  39. Reflect on This: • (Exo 34:6-7 NKJV) And the LORD passed before him and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, {7} "keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children's children to the third and the fourth generation."

  40. Reaping what you sow. • (2 Sam 22:27 NKJV) With the pure You will show Yourself pure; And with the devious You will show Yourself shrewd. • For comparison • (Psa 18:26 NCV) You are pure to those who are pure, but you are against those who are bad.

  41. Don’t be Proud • (2 Sam 22:28 NKJV) You will save the humble people; But Your eyes are on the haughty, that You may bring them down. • A New Testament concept as well • (James 4:6 NKJV) But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble."

  42. The Lamp! • (2 Sam 22:29 NKJV) "For You are my lamp, O LORD; The LORD shall enlighten my darkness. • (Psa 119:105 NKJV) Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

  43. God is my strength! • (2 Sam 22:30 NKJV) For by You I can run against a troop; By my God I can leap over a wall.

  44. Praise for God’s Righteousness! • (2 Sam 22:31 NKJV) As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the LORD is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him.

  45. Only One God! • (2 Sam 22:32 NKJV) "For who is God, except the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God?

  46. I Depend on God • (2 Sam 22:33 NKJV) God is my strength and power, And He makes my way perfect.

  47. He makes me what I am • (2 Sam 22:34 NKJV) He makes my feet like the feet of deer, And sets me on my high places.

  48. He has given me military victory • (2 Sam 22:35 NKJV) He teaches my hands to make war, So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.

  49. Gentleness has made me great. • (2 Sam 22:36 NKJV) "You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; Your gentleness has made me great.

  50. You keep me safe • (2 Sam 22:37 NKJV) You enlarged my path under me; So my feet did not slip.
