  1. Effects of Exercise on Children’s BrainBy Shanthi Blanchard

  2. Don’t Be a Couch Potato • There is increased pressure being brought on schools by decreasing budgets and the “No Child Left Behind Act” to cut non-academic classes, especially physical education class. • Today, half of the school districts do not require Physical education for 1st-5thgrade classes and only 5% require it for 12 grade • What effect does this more sedentary student “life style” have on our children’s physical and mental abilities?

  3. Effects of exercise on Children’s Brain • According to a 2010 report CDC review of 50 studies spanning 23 years, children who are physically fit and active often do better in the classroom than those who are not active.

  4. Childhood Obesity • The current childhood obesity and inactivity epidemic may be affecting intellectual potential and school performance.

  5. Make Exercise Part Of Your Daily Life • The results of one study indicated that 40 minutes a day of vigorous aerobic exercise results in improved planning abilities among overweight children enabling them to better control their behavior in classroom.

  6. Threshold has not been reached • Only 19 of 55 minutes class were spent in moderate to vigorous activity. This may not provide enough stimulation to influence academic achievement. • Student who met Healthy People 2010 guidelines for vigorous activity had significantly higher grades than students who performed no vigorous activity.

  7. More Effective Neuro Electric Profile • Children with greater aerobic fitness exhibited more effective neuron electric profile on a stimulus discrimination task, along with better behavioral measures of reaction time and response accuracy than lower fit children

  8. Effects on Executive Functioning • Current research findings, suggest that systematic exercise programs may actually enhance development both in academic’s and throughout life. • They note that cognition is a general term that reflects a number of underlying process and that aerobic exercise affects them differently. • Executive function appears to be effected the most by exercise.

  9. General circulation- Happy Hormones • Physical activity improves general circulation, increase blood flow to the brain and raises levels of norepinephrine and endorphins, all of which may reduce stress, improve mood induce a relaxing affect after exercise and possibly result in improved achievement.

  10. Reducing your risk of type 2 diabetes • Physical activity among youth and its relation to heightened incidence of disease, such as childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus has become national health concern. • Nearly half the people Ages 12-21, are not vigorously active on a regular basis.

  11. Study Done In Urbana-Champaign • The relationship between physical fitness and academic achievement has received much attention owing to the increase prevalence of children who are overweight and unfit. • A study of 259 third and fifth grade public school students found that field tests of physical fitness were positively related to academic achievement. • Aerobic capacity was positively associated with academic achievement. • BMI was inversely related. • Associations were demonstrated in total academic achievement mathematics achievement, and reading achievement.

  12. Effects of Exercise on Cardiovascular Health • The heart becomes stronger as a result of exercise, so it can pump more blood through the body with every beat and continue working at maximum level, if needed, with less strain. • The resting heart rate of those who exercise is also slower, because less effort is needed to pump blood.

  13. Controlling Your Hypertension • Physical activity strengthens your heart so it can pump more blood flow to your body and brain.

  14. Osteoporosis • One of the best ways to strengthen your bones and prevent osteoporosis is by getting regular exercise. • Even if you already have osteoporosis, exercising can help maintain the bone mass you have.

  15. Alzheimer’s • many scientists believe physical activity is more likely to help those suffering from Alzheimer's than existing pharmaceuticals or supplements.

  16. Exercise can help you sleep like a baby • Just like sleeping, brushing teeth, and going to the bathroom, exercise activity should be a part of your daily life.
