CIC Network Update: Fiber Infrastructure and Switch Configuration for Phase 1 Buildings

This update outlines the progress and plans for the CIC project focusing on buildings such as OT, Clark C, and Shepardson. The priority is to commence work on the fiber infrastructure immediately, with switch configurations starting the week of 2/7 and installations planned for early March. The goal is to complete installations in 9 buildings by the end of the Spring semester. Concerns affecting the timeline include fiber infrastructure, power, cooling, and rack space. Phase 2 will address further needs, including 10G considerations and bandwidth issues.

  1. CIC NOC Update 2/04/11 Greg Redder redder@colostate.edu

  2. Phase 1 buildings • OT • Clark C • Shepardson • ARBL • Engineering • A/Z • VTH • Atmos • NESB

  3. Budget Status

  4. Pending budgetary needs • Fiber • UPS • 1 Gig cards for existing MDF switches.

  5. Timeframe • Start work immediately on fiber infrastructure • Start configuration of switches week of 2/7 • Start switch installs first week of March • Complete 9 buildings by end of Spring semester

  6. Concerns that can affect order/timeframe • Fiber infrastructure • Power/UPS • Cooling • Rack space

  7. Process • Bring dual gig links in from core gear at Engineering and NESB. Attach these connections to new CIC switch. • Connect CIC switch in front of current MDF switch and provide two gig links into existing building switch. • Attach environmental controls, life-safety, video, alarms, cardkey to switch. • Designate new CIC switch as “demark”

  8. Phase 2 • Research concerns, 10G needs, other…? • Consider buildings connected at only 100M? • Consider buildings not affiliated with a College or a specific “hub” (don’t have a “see xyz…” in bandwidth utilization column)? • Consider buildings with bandwidth issues/concerns?
