  1. “I am Not Ashamed…” Romans 1:16 Sermon #8 “Pilot or Co-Pilot?”

  2. The Intent: This series was intended to help us see how Paul shared the good news and consider how and why we do the same. I would like us to consider our personal connection to the gospel message as well as our desire and methods of sharing it with others by looking at God’s message to the church at Rome through Paul.

  3. Our Calling: We are also set apart to share the good news. How are you doing this? and How are you doing with this?

  4. “Gospel” = Good News The good news is that the separation that sin causes between us and God can be repaired by the grace of God through turning from wrong, choosing to do right, and showing surrender to Christ as the leader of your life by dying to your old life, being buried in water, and being raised to a new life of obedience to God and His word.

  5. The Challenge: It Can Be Hard To… Live half dead and put to death the other half. Keep fighting our sinful nature. Not settle for “good enough” Not make excuses, rationalize, justify, or become apathetic. Remember that we desire to change because of Jesus.

  6. Romans 8:1-17 Page 1756 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, 4 in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.

  7. Romans 8:5-8 5 Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; 7 the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. 8 Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.

  8. Romans 8:9-11 9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. Andif anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 Andifthe Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

  9. Romans 8:12-14 12 Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation--but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. 13 For ifyou live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but ifby the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14 because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

  10. Romans 8:15-17 15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

  11. Romans 8:18-39 Suffering and glory are the focus of Romans 8:18-27 and the chapter concludes by showing how God works in our lives for our benefit and that nothing can separate us from God’s love. That is good news is it not!

  12. So What and What Now: Be thankful for the work of the Holy Spirit in empowering us for transformation, changing our relationship with God and our eternal inheritance. Rely on the Holy Spirit to put to death the misdeeds of the body. Commit our minds to Christ by allowing the Holy Spirit to fill us and change us completely.

  13. So What and What Now: Proudly carry the good news and share it with others. Be thankful for God’s work in rescuing us and transforming us.

  14. If God is your co-pilot…switch seats!!!
