Choice and Progression • 63% of young people were able to name A-levels as a post-GCSE qualification, very few could name any of the other choices available • 7% of pupils were able to name Apprenticeships as a post-GCSE qualification • 26% of pupils were able to name NVQs • 19% of pupils were able to name BTECs • 38% felt their parents were the most reliable source of advice • 35% felt they had not had enough advice to make the right decision • Awareness or interest in an apprenticeship is low at 14% (boys 17%, girls 12%) • 49% feel they are well-informed about the jobs available • 57% expect to go to university • 53% planning to go to college • Pupils on free school meals (FSM) were far less likely to expect to go to university than those not on FSM (46% .v. 60%) • Edge Foundation's research which says only 27% of parents value vocational education

Choice and Progression • Data from Ofsted show that over 1.3 million pupils in years 9, 10 and 11 are in schools where they cannot be confident they will receive the careers advice they need. • DfEspent just 0.008% of its budget on funding the National Careers Service (NCS) in 2012/13.[2] • In June, the CBI’s education and skills survey found that only 5% of businesses feel the careers advice available to young people is good enough. • In the same month, the National Careers Council reportcalled for “a major culture change in the careers provision for young people...in order to help address the mismatch of skills shortages, and in particular high youth unemployment.”    • In January 2013, the Education Select Committee published a report, calling for a greater role for the NCS to support – and challenge – schools to deliver independent, impartial careers advice.

The Future – Innovation in Education • Lead User Innovation and Ofsted Inspection in Colleges • Seven colleges in Y&H (of 38) at ‘3’ or Requires Improvement • Lead Users = college quality managers in a network group and meeting regularly • Funding for small scale QI initiatives • Feedback from each and every Y&H college inspection • Shared expertise and insight • All seven reinspected in 2012/13 or 2013/14, all moving from 3 to 2.
