  1. My Internship at Erin Mahoney Life Science Scholars December 2004 – January 2005

Obtaining my Internship • I have been a patient at Orthodontic Associates since March 1996. • Dr. Abrahams was thrilled with my interest in her profession and allowed me to work with her during winter break ’04-’05. 1 day/week Bel Air Office 2225 Old Emmorton Rd. 410-515-1044 2 days/week Perry Hall Office 7544 Belair Rd. 410-882-9995

  3. Dr. Heather Abrahams, D.D.S. • Dr. Heather Abrahams was raised in Ontario, Canada. • She received her B.S. in biology from the University of Western Ontario. • Her dental and orthodontic training was completed at Ohio State University.

  4. My Responsibilities • Sanitizing instruments • Developing X-rays • Taking dental impressions • Pouring dental models • Assisting the doctor and other assistants • Performing simple tasks on patients I spent a lot of my time in the sanitization lab sterilizing instruments and putting them away.

  5. Dental Impressions • Impressions are what make a mold of the mouth to be used for dental records or to create dental appliances. • First, prepare the impression material from a mixture of alginate and water. • Quickly fill the pre-fitted metal tray with this mixture. • Then, carefully insert the tray into the patient’s mouth while causing the least amount of discomfort. • The material will set in about 60 seconds. I am filling the tray with impression material before quickly inserting it in my patient’s mouth.

From Impression to Model • The model material is prepared with the right amount of water and plaster (shown top left). • Then a vibrating machine is used to decrease the amount of bubbles in the plaster. • The plaster is then strategically poured into the dental tray to create the model. • After the plaster has hardened, the model can be separated from the tray.

  7. Orthodontic Instruments • During my internship, I learned a lot about orthodontic methods and the instruments used. Here are four of the major instruments: “Bird’s Beak” Weingart Distal End Cutter Lig’ Cutter

Hands-On Experience • Dr. Abrahams felt confident enough for me to perform simple orthodontic tasks on patients: • Changing- • Ligatures • Power chains • Wires, etc. • This was a great way for me to engage in patient interaction, practice manual dexterity, and get acquainted with working in the mouth. I had a lot of practice changing “ligs” on patients.

  9. Impact: Brace Yourself An Incredible Opportunity: • I obtained intense knowledge of the orthodontic/dental field through hands-on experience that I will carry with me to dental school. • Dr. Abrahams has become a mentor and afriend to me as a successful woman in the dental field. • Being able to experience daily procedures in a dental practice allowed me to picture myself doing this years down the road.

  10. What the Future Holds • Dr. Abrahams and her staff have invited me to work with them again over this upcoming summer, and I have accepted. • They plan on teaching me more advanced orthodontic practices, such as bonding and gluing the braces to the teeth.
