  2. Timeline- Roman Era (1st and 2nd Century AD) • Bridges of the Roman Era were mostly built over ravines. Other bridges were built over bridges. • An example of Roman Bridges still exsisting today would be the Alcántara bridge, Toledo, Spain.

  3. The Middle Ages (12th – 16th Century) • Inhabited bridges were built more commonly during this time period. • One of the more famous bridges, The London Bridge, was built between 1176 and 1209. This is the world's first stone bridge to be constructed in a tidal waterway, with a large rise and fall of level every twelve hours.

  4. AD 1779; Ironbridge • The world’s first Ironbridge, with a single span of over 100 feet. • It was over the Severn just downstream from Coalbrookdale.

  5. Thaddeus Hyatt Suggests a New Way to ~Reinforce Bridge Beams~ • Thaddeus Hyatt suggested a way to reinforce concrete to avoid stress on a beam. • His method suggested that a reinforcement be placed near the bottom of a concrete beam and curved up where the supports will hold up the beam.

  6. 1883; The Completion of The Brooklyn Bridge • In the year 1883 the monumental bridge was completed. It spans at about 5989 feet long over the east river, New York.

  7. 1883; The Ovingham Bridge • This bridge was built in 1883 and was used mainly for a toll bridge. The Ovingham Bridge is a bridge across the River Tyne at Ovingham, England. • After 1945 the bridge was no longer used for a toll bridge.

  8. Bridges Around the World- ~The KintaikyoBridge~ • The bridge was reconstructed in the town of Iwakuni in 1673 after every other attempt to cross the Nishiki River via bridge had been foiled by seasonal flooding. • About 1950 the bridge was still standing , but soon after, a typhoon had destroyed this bridge. • Now in this era the bridge has been rebuilt.
