  1. Joining the Third Reich 8th Grade Language Arts Schema Building Activity

  2. The Purpose and Goal In order to experience Nazi Germany, every student will take on a false identity. The identities include upper-class business people, lower-class persons, reapers, Gestapo, and politicians. To motivate you to win, and to truly represent the fact that there were winners and losers in the war, students who win will receive 50 points. Students who lose will receive 0 points.

  3. The Game After receiving your false identity, the game begins. Different characters have different goals. You must meet your goal in order to receive your points. There are “Reapings” or periods of time during which you must meet your goal, or risk being “killed” by the game’s Reapers. If you are “killed” you lose the game.

  4. Lower-Class Workers Family Name: Bach Social Class: Lower-Class Worker Job Description: Your job is menial and low-paying. Since World War I you have struggled to care for and feed your family. Find people with your same family name, together you can pool your funds to purchase food and shelter. Pay: $5 per Reaping Period Necessities: In order to survive, you need one bread/shelter. If you are in a family you only need one bread/shelter per two people in your family. Ethnicity: German If you do not have shelter and bread during “Reaping Periods” in the correct color, the Reapers may kill you.

  5. Upper-Class Business Person Family Name: Zweig Social Class: Upper-Class Business Person Job Description: You own a profitable business. Ethnicity: German If you do not have shelter and bread during “reaping periods”, the Reapers may kill you.

  6. Jews Jews can be anyone. Ethnicity: Jew In addition to all of your other tasks, you are working to conceal your ethnicity. If you are asked by a Gestapo if you are Jew, and they give you an “Accusation Card” you must respond honestly. If you find a “Protector”, they can tell you where the “Safe Area” is. There you will find a card that gives further instruction.

  7. Gestapo (Police) Job:Gastapo (Police) Job Description: Your job is to find Jews. Their identities are concealed, but if you ask them, they must respond. BUT YOU MAY ONLY ACCUSE 5 PEOPLE PER REAPING, of being a Jew. You will receive 5 “accusation cards” at the beginning of the reaping to use. If you find a Jew, take away their identity card, bread, and shelter (all of which becomes yours to use and spend), then send them to the “Concentration Camp” area. If you find anyone who is helping a Jew, take all their belongings and send them to the “Concentration Camp” area. You will also have “bribes” to bribe other players into selling out the Jews and protectors. Necessities: You do not need money or bread, but you must send at least 10 people to the concentration camp by the end of the class period for full-credit. Ethnicity: German

  8. Protectors This is an additional role, that can be added to any character card. In addition to collecting your bread and shelter, your job is to find Jews, and tell them where the “safe area” is. If you are caught, you will be sent to the Concentration Camp. You must also collect your bread/shelter for each reaping period. The safe area is…

  9. Reapers  Job: Reaper Job Description: You are Death. It is your job to identify who is alive and who is dead. During each “Reaping Period” you will circulate the room, identifying who does not have bread and shelter from the previous reaping. Necessities: You do not need to collect money or bread. In order to receive full-credit you must “reap” at least 20 people by the end of the hour. Ethnicity: German

  10. Politicians Job: Politician Job Description: You are a politic looking for a group of followers. You will circulate the room getting people to “sign onto” your political group. To do this, you can do whatever you think is necessary including making promises (money, food, etc). You will receive a sheet where all of your followers will sign. Pay: None, you are immune to the bread/shelter. But you must have 15 names on your sheet by the end of the class period to receive full-credit.
