According to CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board) of India, one should only buy silent type genset (to reduce noise pollution), which has sound level less than 75 dB (up to 1000 kVA) and 1m away from homes in an open environment (i.e. where there are no restrictions which can cause sound to bounce back). However, people in rural India are still using open gensets, as CPCB is unable to reach there. Usually, a silent genset engine has a life of 20,000 hours or 20 years, but if the daily use of genset is reduced by improving power situation, then it will probably have much longer life. However, there are silent gensets by TMTL which have crossed 30,000 hours. Hence, I would recommend you to buy TMTL silent gensets as they have 62.5kVa gensets which work under unfavourable conditions. Also, checked by the dB meter, it fulfils the criteria of CPCB.

The competition in genset industry in India is so intense that the initial diesel generator prices are more or less same for all of them. I know this because my friend recently bought a genset and I helped him research it. More pertinent question, I believe, is the operational cost, which one could be divided in two parts – fuel cost and service cost. My friend bought an Eicher Engines genset from TMTL. We had seen that there was a difference of at least 0.1 l/hr with any competition. This number seems small but considering a price of Rs. 70/l for diesel and 25,000 hour average lives, it can translate to almost Rs.2 lakh. Also since their engine is air cooled, it is relatively maintenance free and with longest service period interval, it was no brainer for us to buy it. I must say that their after sales service is also pretty solid. At one time, when there was a wedding in my friend’s house and the generator had some issues, the TMTL service people came to the house at 2 am to fix it.
