  4. Cassie, the young narrator, and her siblings experience racism daily. One early example is described in the first chapter, when the reader learns about segregated* schools in the 1930s. Segregation (noun)-the practice or policy of creating separate facilities within the same society for the use of a minority group Racism (noun)-hatred or intolerance of another race or other races
