  2. ASK YOUR PREACHER/PASTOR Or PRIEST WHERE IN THE SCRIPTURES IS THE OFFICE OF THE POPE RECORDED? & “WAS PETER THE FIRST POPE?”

  3. The Scriptures Teach…. • Ephesians 1:19-23 • And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769.

  4. The Scriptures Teach…. • Colossians 1:18-19 • And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. • *** The Context of this Passage Has Jesus Christ As The Subject. ***

  5. The Scriptures Teach…. • Matthew 21:41-44 ,Mark 12:10, Luke 20:16 • They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons. Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769.

  6. The Scriptures Teach…. • Acts 4:11-12 • This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769.

  7. The Scriptures Teach…. • Ephesians 5:23 • For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. • Christ IS THE HEAD OF THE CHURCH NOT A MAN ON EARTH!

  8. The Scriptures Teach…. • 1 Peter 2:7-8 • Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769.

  9. Thus The Scriptures Teach…. • THAT JESUS CHRIST IS: • THE HEAD OF THE CHURCH • THAT JESUS CHRIST IS THE STONE: • THAT WAS REJECTED • THAT WAS CRUCIFIED • THAT BECOME THE HEAD STONE • THE QUESTION THEN ARISES WHERE DO THE SCRIPTURES TEACH: • THAT JESUS IS THE INVISIBLE HEAD BUT THE POPE IS THE VISIBLE HEAD OF THE CHURCH?

  10. In A Catechism of Christian Doctrine – Revised Edition of the Baltimore Catechism # 3 p. 111 • The Following Question is found: Did Christ give special power in His church to any one of the apostles? • Answer: Christ gave special power in His church to Saint Peter by making him the head of the apostles and the chief teacher and ruler of the entire church. • The power of the keys was promised to Saint Peter and was actually conferred on him • Saint Peter was recognized by the early Christians from the beginning as the head of the church.” • Scriptures given for this is Matthew 16:17-19

  11. Matthew 16:18 --- The Catholics Church Appeal To Verify Peter As The First Pope??? • “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. • DOES THIS PASSAGE OF SCRIPTURE PROVE PETER WAS THE FIRST POPE AND THAT THE CHURCH WAS TO BE BUILT UPON HIM?

  12. NOTE THE GREEK OF THE TEXT • And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter 4074 , and upon this rock 4073 I will build my church; • 4074 Petros { pet’-ros} ---- apparently a primary word; TDNT - 6:100,835; n pr m • AV - Peter 161, stone 1; 162 • GK - 4377 { Pevtro" } • Peter = “a rock or a stone” --- one of the twelve disciples of Jesus • 4073 petra { pet’-ra} from the same as 4074; TDNT - 6:95,834; n f • AV - rock 16; 16 -- GK - 4376 { pevtra } • a rock, cliff or ledge • a projecting rock, crag, rocky ground • a rock, a large stone • metaph. a man like a rock, by reason of his firmness and strength of soul • Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon, (Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc.) 1995.

  13. BY THE STUDY OF THE GREEK TEXT…. • PETER COULD NOT BE THE ONE ON WHOM THE CHURCH WOULD BE BUILT: • Since the term used is “Petros” • THE CHURCH WAS TO BE BUILT ON THE STATEMENT THAT PETER MADE CONCERNING JESUS…. • “THOU ART THE CHRIST THE SON OF GOD • THUS THE GREEK WORD “PETRA”

  14. Matthew 16:19 Appealed To As The Special Authority Peter Possessed… • “And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. • The teaching of Jesus is the standard for Peter and for all preachers of Christ. Note the future perfect indicative (ejstaidedemenon,ejstailelumenon [estai dedemenon, estai lelumenon]), a state of completion. All this assumes, of course, that Peter’s use of the keys will be in accord with the teaching and mind of Christ. The binding and loosing is repeated by Jesus to all the disciples (18:18). Later after the Resurrection Christ will use this same language to all the disciples (John 20:23), showing that it was not a special prerogative of Peter. • Robertson, Archibald Thomas, Word Pictures in the New Testament, (Nashville, Tennessee, USA: Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention) 1998, c1933.

  15. There Is Nor Scriptural Proof That Peter Was The Bishop Of Rome Or The First Pope • Acts 12 shows us that Peter was a prisoner in Jerusalem during the time the Catholic church claims he was the Bishop in Rome. • Paul was a prisoner in Rome while he wrote: • Philemon, Colossians, Ephesians, Philippians, and 2 Timothy yet never mentions Peter. • In 2 Timothy Paul states that Luke was with him --- Where is Peter? • Paul wrote to the church in Rome approx. 58A.D. and never once mentioned Peter. • Peter wrote two epistles and never once mentioned Rome. • No Inspired writer ever mention Peter as being in Rome. • Jesus taught that humility was the greatest in the kingdom – Matt. 18:1-4; Luke 22:24-26 • Peter’s spirit is contrary to that of the Papacy: • Acts 10:26 • Gal. 2:11

  16. THIS TITLE of POPE WAS NOT ALWAYS READILY ACCEPTED • Gregory the Great stated concerning this: • You know it, my brother; hath not the venerable council of Chalcedon conferred the honorary title of universal upon the bishops of this apostolic. See, whereof I am, by God’s Will, the servant? And yet none of us hath permitted this title to be given him; none assumed this bold title, lest by assuming a special episcopate, we should seem to refuse it to all the brethren…. But far from Christians be this blasphemous name by which all honor is taken from all other priests, while it is foolishly arrogated by one.” • To the emperor Mauritius he wrote: I am bold to say, that whosoever adopts or affects the title of universal bishop has the pride and character of anti-Christ, and is in some manner his forerunner in this haughty quality of elevating himself above the rest of his order.” • Quotes From: The Bible vs. Romanism, Trice pp 67-68.

  17. CLAIMS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH WITH REGARDS TO THE POPE • The New York Catechism states: • “The Pope takes the place of Jesus Christ on earth …. By divine right the pope has supreme and full power in faith and morals over each and every pastor and his flock. He is the true Vicar of Christ, the head of the entire church, the father and teacher of all Christians. He is the infallible ruler, the founder of dogmas, the author of and judge of councils; the universal ruler of truth, the arbiter of the world, the supreme judge of heaven and of earth, the judge of all, being judged by no one, God himself on earth.” • Pope Leo XIII (1885) Stated that the Pope holds: • “upon this earth the place of God Almighty” • {The Reunion of Christendom Encyclical} • IF GOD ON EARTH THEN THE POPE IS WITHOUT SIN AND CANNOT SIN! BUT:

  18. HISTORY REFLECTS A DIFFERENT STORY: • Matthew 7:20 --- “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769 • Pope Steven VII (896-897) • Treated the dead body of his predecessor “Formosus” in an inhumane manner: • Body was exhumed after it had been buried for nine months • Dressed the body in papal vestments and placed him on trial. • Found him guilty of ambition and then annulled all of “Formosus: actions as Pope • Had the fingers cut off and is said to have had the corpse beheaded. • What was left was thrown into the river Tiber. • {An Illustrated History of the Popes, Michael Walsh p. 91}

  19. HISTORY REFLECTS A DIFFERENT STORY: • Matthew 7:20 --- “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769 • Pope Sergius III (904-911) • Lived with a prostitute named Marzozia and her daughter. • Had a son by her who latter became a Pope also. • {History of the Popes by Ludwig Pastor} • Pope John XI (931-935) • The illigitimate son of Sergius III. • Cardinal Baronius said in his AANALES: • “The Holy Roman Church has been vilely corrupted by a monster like him.”

  20. HISTORY REFLECTS A DIFFERENT STORY: • Matthew 7:20 --- “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769 • Pope John XII (955-963) • Ordianed at 18 he looked at the papacy as a means of enjoying life to the full. • Ordained priest from his companions of the stable. • Chief pleasures were women and hunting. • His ignorance was startling even to his contemporaries. • He was deposed for his immorality and his bad grammar. • {An Illustrated History of the Popes p. 93}

  21. HISTORY REFLECTS A DIFFERENT STORY: • Matthew 7:20 --- “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769 • Pope Benedict IX (1033-1045) • Made Pope at the age of twelve disgraced the office with every form of excess and sold his papacy to acquire the hand of a lady. • {Encyclopedia Britannica, vol 19 p. 497} • Pope Alexander VI • Had ten illegitimate children by four different mistresses. • Thought to have gained the office by bribery. • {An Illustrated History of the Popes, p. 145}

  22. Bishop of Rome Vicar of Christ Successor to the prince of the Apostles Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church Patriarch of the West Primate of Italy Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Province of Rome Sovereign of the Vatican City Judge of All Servant of the Servants of God Father and teacher of all Christians Infallible ruler Founder of Dogmas Author of and Judge of Councils Universal Ruler of Truth Arbiter of the World Supreme Judge of heaven and earth And God Himself on earth History Reveals Many More Popes Just Like These: • The Catholic Church has never claimed that the Pope is not able to sin but…. When you call a man: What Is THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH IMPLYING?

  23. THE STRUCTURE OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IS NOT FOUND IN THE N.T.? • Pope - Supreme authority in matters of faith and discipline. • College of Cardinals - Advisors to the pope; Supervise the administration of the church. • Archbishops - In charge of archdiocese and has precedence in that province. • Bishops - Ruling authority in a diocese. • Priests(Parish Pastors) - Serves a parish; Celebrates Mass and administers the sacraments. • Deacons - Can be married; Preach, baptize, officiate at weddings and distribute Holy Communion. • Ecclesiastical Councils. • General Council - Called by the pope; Composed of all Catholic bishops in the world; Its actions on doctrine and discipline must be approved by the pope. • Plenary or National Council - Bishops in a country; Actions must be approved by the pope. • Diocesan or Provincial Council - Apply the decrees passed on by the other councils.

  24. The Truth of The Matter Is…. • The Papacy Is Not Found In the Word Of God and is thus Condemned. • It is not a good work - II Tim. 3:16-17 • It does not pertain to life and godliness - II Pet. 1:3 • It causes one to not have God - II John 9 • It is not authorized by Christ - Col. 3:17 • It cannot be done by faith - II Cor. 5:7; Rom. 10:17; 14:23 • It is going beyond what is written - I Cor. 4:6 • It is not as the oracles of God - I Pet. 4:11 • It is not according to the pattern - Heb. 8:5 • It does not pertain to the seed of the kingdom – Luke 8:11; Matt.13:18-19 • It is not of righteousness - Rom. 1:16-17; 10:1-4 • It is of "no such commandment" - Acts 15:24 • It is iniquity - Matt. 7:22-23 • It is of men - Matt. 21:25; 15:9 • It is not of truth- John 4:24 • It is another gospel - Gal. 1:6-9 • It is adding to the Word of God - Rev. 22:18-19; Deut. 4:2; Prov. 30:5-6
