  1. IEEE DASC Co-Sponsorshipof UPF Working Group Proposal prepared by: Stephen Bailey Chair, Accellera UPF Technical Subcommittee

  2. Agenda • Request for DASC co-sponsorship of WG • Background of UPF-TSC • UPF from start to finish • IEEE and Accellera relationship • Working group • IEEE Timeline

  3. Background for UPF-TSC

  4. Industry Need • Power has become the dominate factor in the design of today’s electronic systems • Explosion in battery operated systems • Many (most) non-portable designs are also constrained by power consumption requirements • Heat generation and dissipation • Practical power supply & management • Current state is a hodge-podge of commercial and ad hoc solutions • SAIF, GAF, etc. • Specification of power aware design characteristics • Often done late at gate-level and ad hoc • Need to verify correctness of power-aware functionality • Done sooner and with higher correlation to design intent

  5. Demonstrated Need • DAC 2006: • TI and Nokia organized a meeting on the topic of an open standard for low power design flows • The 4 top EDA vendors attended • Plus Atrenta • Broad, significant user representation including • TI • Nokia • ARM • ST • Philips • Sun • Shrenik Mehta represented Accellera • Demand for Open, Fast, Inclusive standard

  6. Mission of Accellera Low Power Flow TSC • The accelerated development of an open, comprehensive standard for the specification of power-aware requirements, design intent and implementation, verification and analysis across all design abstraction levels.

  7. Proposed Timeline

  8. UPF from Start to Finish August 28, 2006 – January 23, 2007

  9. Actual Timeline

  10. Actual Timeline P = planned

  11. Highlights • Openness demonstrated throughout • Everyone invited and allowed to participate in TSC • Accellera membership not required to join • Documents available to all TSC members • Fast • Merely 5 months from start to finish • Inclusive • Unprecedented donations from 8 companies • EDA suppliers and users donated • Members and non-members of Accellera

  12. IEEE and Accellera Relationship

  13. Accellera and IEEE • Accellera has long-standing relationship with IEEE • Accellera Technical Committee Policies, Procedures, & Guidelines: • All established Accellera standards are eventually planned for IEEE standardization to speed worldwide acceptance of such standards. • Specification format, strawman donation and any other ownership documents follow or exceed IEEE rules and guidelines. • Plan of record is to transfer UPF to IEEE when complete • Since inception of IEEE Corporate Standards Program, Accellera Board recommends all standards be entity-based • SystemVerilog, PSL, OCI, UPF

  14. CAG/DASC UPF Working Group

  15. UPF Working Group • Submit draft PAR to DASC Chair for SC review and comment NLT 31 Jan 07 • Sponsor PAR jointly with CAG • Draft PAR presented to CAG ~6 Feb 07 • Entity-based • Open to everyone • Initial WG chair: Stephen Bailey • Conduct elections within DASC required 6 month period for all WG officers • Follow prior precedent of operating procedures for jointly sponsored WGs

  16. IEEE Timeline

  17. IEEE Timeline

  18. Request approval of DASC-SC for UPF Working Group Co-Sponsorship Thank you!

  19. On Convergence • The UPF WG is willing: • To accept more than one technology donation • Provide the forum for converging multiple industry formats into a single standard • Change the name of the resulting standard • Conditions: • Only one: All donations for consideration must be submitted quickly
