Biography • born April 5, 1588; In Malmesbury, Wiltshire. • raised by his wealthy uncle. • 1603- he attended Magdalen Hall, Oxford where he studied scholastic philosophy. • tutored the son of William Cavendish, and spent most of his life working for the Cavendish family. • 1640- fled New England in fear of being persecuted for what he wrote. • Died on December 4, 1679

  4. Philosophy • State of nature • The basic state of a human being is to govern one self. • Self preservation • Social contract

  5. Philosophy (continued) • Did not think people could govern themselves. • Believed people are inherently bad

  6. Underlying ideas • Social contract • Fear of violent death • Rejection of free will

  7. Beliefs in Government • Most famous for political philosophy • Challenged doctrines for the Divine Right of Kings. • He was a royalist • Believed people listened to their government out of fear of death • Social contract to keep peace and order • Viewed life as nasty, brutish and short.

  8. Our opinion… • Self preservation- protect themselves not England • Social contract- people giving up some freedoms for the protection of other freedoms
