DO #17 ADS-B Contract • Primary Investigators: • Tom Zeidlik (UND) • Gary Ullrich (UND) • John Robbins (ERAU) • FAA Sponsor: • JereHayslett
ADS-B and the 2020 FAA Final Rule • By January 1, 2020 all aircraft operating in transponder airspace will be required to carry equipment that produces an ADS-B Out broadcast • There is currently no mandate for ADS-B In • ADS-B In receives ADS-B datalink information and displays it to the cockpit • 2020 rule established the engineering criteria for ADS-B Out Wednesday June 13, 2012
How do we efficiently transition to the 2020 ADS-B Rule? • Avionics manufacturers can now design ADS-B out equipment that is “ADS-B 2020 Compliant” • No ADS-B 2020 Compliant Out equipment has been designed and certified by the FAA • Equipment costs will be initially high • High equipment costs will discourage aircraft owners from purchasing and installing this equipment • Manufacturers cannot reduce costs until many units are sold • Aircraft owners are waiting for the costs to go down • Many aircraft owners are unaware of the ADS-B 2020 Rule Wednesday June 13, 2012
What is ADS-B? (ADS-B 101) • ADS-B is the emerging technology that is redefining the paradigm of COMMUNICATIONS – NAVIGATION – SURVELLANCE in Air Traffic Management, and NEXGEN http://www.faa.gov/nextgen/implementation/portfolio/trans_support_progs/adsb/ Wednesday June 13, 2012
ADS-B Automatic Always ON Dependent Relies on very accurate GPS Data Surveillance Provides aircraft position, altitude, speed, heading, identification, and other data Broadcast Does not require interrogation – data is broadcast to any aircraft or ground station equipped to receive the datalink signal Wednesday June 13, 2012
ADS-B Services • Traffic Information Service – Broadcast (TIS-B) • Sends a composite of radar and ADS-B data back through the ground stations to the cockpit • The pilot sees what the controller sees • Cockpit display will show all aircraft in radar contact with controllers, ADS-B equipped or not, within 15 miles, plus or minus 3,500 feet • No subscription costs Wednesday June 13, 2012
ADS-B Services • Flight Information Services – Broadcast (FIS-B) • Share graphical weather including thunderstorms depicted by NEXRAD ground-based radar and a wide range of graphical and text messages • Significant and hazardous weather • Winds and temperatures aloft • Pilot reports • Status of Special Use Airspace • Temporary flight Restrictions • No subscription costs • http://www.faa.gov/nextgen/implementation/portfolio/trans_support_progs/adsb/broadcastservices/ Wednesday June 13, 2012
ADS-B & GPS • All pilots see the same “picture” as seen by the controller, and at the same time • Simultaneous sharing of location, speed, altitude, situation awareness Wednesday June 13, 2012
Industry Standards 1090 Mhz Mode-S • 1090 Mhz Extended Squitter datalink (ES) • Mode-S based • Frequency is becoming congested • ICAO preferred 978 Mhz UAT • Universal Access Transceiver (UAT) • 978 Mhz datalink • Less congested • FAA preferred Wednesday June 13, 2012

Research Goals • Identify the costs and benefits of installing a full suite of 2020 Compliant ADS-B avionics • Establish Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs) for several categories of General Aviation aircraft • No more than six aircraft categories Wednesday June 13, 2012
Criteria for choosing aircraft owners • Business owners preferred • Detailed record keeping • Variety of weather conditions • Variety of geographic locations • Business owner will fly in more challenging conditions than a typical GA pilot • Weather • Class B airspace • More flying hours vs. a typical GA pilot Wednesday June 13, 2012
Criteria for choosing aircraft • No Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for ADS-B 2020 Compliant avionics • High number of aircraft registered Wednesday June 13, 2012
Criteria for choosing ADS-B Avionics • Looked for a company with a commitment for fielding 2020 compliant ADS-B equipment • Looked for a company that is willing to pay all Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) costs Wednesday June 13, 2012
Single Engine Piston • Piper PA-32 Saratoga • Sight seeing company based in Las Vegas • Light Cabin Twin • Cessna 414 • Emergency Medical Services (EMS) company based in North Dakota • Single Engine Turbine • Pilatus PC-12 • EMS company based in North Dakota • Multi Engine Turbine • Beechcraft King Air • EMS company based in Alaska Wednesday June 13, 2012
Why Avidyne? • Avidyne is key player in ADS-B and is uniquely focused on avionics for general aviation aircraft. • They have not publicly announced all their plans for their future products, however: • Avidyne has made significant investments and intends to be a major player in ADS-B avionics and other panel-mounted avionics • Wide range of certified 1090MHz- and 978MHz-based products forthcoming from Avidyne
Avidyne has a proven track record of providing wide-reaching interfaces to allow connection to multitude of 3rd-party avionics • As an example, Avidyne MFDs support 20 different radars, all major traffic systems including TCAS, TAS & TIS, datalink weather from XM, SIRIUS and IRIDIUM, Lightning Detection, and TAWS. (Other brands are moving to closed systems with more vertical integration.) Wednesday June 13, 2012
Avidynehas a history of innovation and is focused on making easy-to-use avionics • Avidyne is key partner in development of Traffic Situational Alerts with Advisories (TSAA) algorithms • Avidyne & MIT are developing true TSO’d ADS-B Traffic Alerting designed for GA operations Wednesday June 13, 2012
Traffic Situational Awareness with Alerts (TSAA) • M.I.T. with partner Avidyne have received the contract from the FAA to prototype, demonstrate, and draft the standards for the TSAA application • FAA funding because of the benefits for non-TCAS users • TSAA is the next step beyond “Airborne” ADS-B application • ProvidesVisual & Audible alerts to pilots of threatening traffic.
Uses 'ADS-B In' information to create alerts similar to TAS or TCAS alerts (no RAs), but improved performance based on more accurate ADS-B data and potentially a database of airports and runways • Algorithm development focused on GA operating environment including in the traffic pattern and helicopter operations Wednesday June 13, 2012
Schedule: • Application development and simulations: through 2011 • Flight tests and refinements: 2012 • Available for installation: mid-2013 Wednesday June 13, 2012
