  1. Bellwork: • “She’s this wrinkled old bat with bad breath, so kids avoid her. I tried to sit downwind of her breath, bit it was right after lunch and she kept burping little bursts of garlic.” –Sharon M. Draper Tears of a Tiger • 1. Explain how the detail brings the reader into the scene? 3-5 sentences • 2. Sketch a little picture of the scene. Then answer below your picture: What details did you include in your scene and why? How did the sentence highlight those details for you as a reader? Cite Evidence. 7-10 sentences

  2. Bellwork Continued: • Write two sentences about someone you want to sit next to. Use Draper’s sentences as a model substituting positive details for negative ones.

  3. Biographical Narrative • Take out your notes and summarize them at the bottom of you page in a paragraph ( cornell format) • Be sure to include: • Purpose of narrative • Organization of narrative • Details to include

  4. Example • As we read, pay attention to how the example follows the correct format for a biographical narrative. • On your notes, list what it does well and what it could do better.

  7. Begin Drafting: • Use your Lifeline, bellwork, and notes to begin writing out your memory on paper. • Homework: Finish Writing out the memory in as much detail as you can ( Minimum two pages handwritten due tomorrow)

  8. Bellwork September 11th: Watch the Video commemorating 9/11 http://www.teachhub.com /911-memorial-video-writing-prompts 1. Define the term American by analyzing the waysthe events of 9/11 and its aftermath shaped what it means to be an American. Consider the actions the government has taken after these events, how it changed people's lives and how you think of yourself living as a post-9/11 American. Clarify the definition in at least ¾ page of writing.

  11. Peer Edit of Pre-Draft • Swap with the person next to you. • Give the person comments on: • The event they have chosen. Does it seem impactful? Clear? A logical choice to write about? • Tips you have for drafting the actual paper. Suggestions on the order of events. What is the life lesson you learned from reading the memory? Is the life lesson clear enough to you? Tell them to add detail or to take detail away at certain points. Underline anything unclear.

  12. Begin Drafting: • Use your Lifeline, bellwork, pre-rough draft and notes to begin writing out your Rough Draft. ( I will be having mini-conferences as you work to see how each of you is doing) • Homework: Type your rough draft and bring it to class tomorrow. ( 3 pages; MLA formatted, follow the structure in your notes with a Beginning, Middle, and End )

Narrative #9A • We gave this a 2(-)based on the rubric. • Positives: Using dialogue, anecdotes • Weaknesses: Grammar, no sensory details, no specific details, no significance, negative: NO BAD WORDS, • Things to keep in mind for my own paper: Add more sensory details, hint rather than tell; include appropriate title and hook; don’t be informal!

Narrative #9I • We gave this a 4(-)based on the rubric • Positives: Lots of sensory details, specific details , good anecdotes, revealed traits thru actions/gestures, dialogue • Weaknesses: Thesis unclear, • Things to keep in mind for my own paper: It can be really interesting to focus on small details that other people would never notice, like the smell of perfume; sensory details really help the reader understand the significance of the subject

Narrative #9B • We gave this a 1+ (1) based on the rubric. • Positives: Nice font  • Weaknesses: Grammar, sentence structure, spelling, no sensory details, does not make it clear HOW aunt is special, one anecdote, four paragraphs • Things to keep in mind for my own paper: Every anecdote you include MUST help contribute to the overall controlling impression. Be specific! I also would focus more on sensory details and mood in my writing.

Narrative #9II • We gave this a 3(-) based on the rubric. • Positives: Good essay structure • Weaknesses: Few sensory details, anecdotes not descriptive, repetitive, conclusion was weak, used “he” too much, fragmented sentences, incomplete, grammar • Things to keep in mind for my own paper: Do exactly what they did, except add more sensory details to bring the anecdotes and stories to life!
