Highlight of Current Activities (1) • Customer Premises Networks (Home Networks) are now junior partners in a relationship like peering/interconnecting to Operators: • The Operator needs to have a reliable QoS to the Home • carrier-grade IPTV, Femto-backhaul, remote-access streaming, … • The Operator needs to know (something) about the home architecture • Remotely manage devices, services and QoS; reduce truck roll & call center costs • The Operator acts like a "transfer network" for home2home services • ETSI TISPAN specifies in Release-3 for Customer Networks • QoS and resource allocation to the home (draft TR 182 031 and within the home (WI 05032 in TISPAN WG5) • Remote-access mechanisms to allow mobile devices to (a) become "part of" the home network, (b) to set up QoS for downloads from the home network, and (c) to set up secure direct links home-to-home (TS 185 003 in WG5) • Energy monitoring and efficiency mechanisms International Telecommunication Union
Highlight of Current Activities (2) ETSI ATTM Harmonisation of External Power Supplies for CPE (Cable CPE/DOCSIS included): ES 202 874 v0.1.1 as cover & TS 102 867 Series External Network Terminal Installations (ENTIs) for copper and optical networks TS 102 872 on Copper ENTI TS 102 873 on optical ENTI TS 105 175-1 for POF system for fibre in the home has been issued by end of 2009 International Telecommunication Union 3
Strategic Direction • Synergies across Fora for Customer Premises Networks (CPNs) • There is a HUGE number of fora and SDOs active for CPN !! • TISPAN WG5 is gradually using liaisons to adapt and incorporate input from many sources, seeking international interoperability. • QoS • Broadband Best Effort is _usually_ good enough, but not always! • TISPAN is cooperating with 3GPP and BBF to find best ways to set up resource and access control for critical applications like Femto-backhaul, FMC and LIPA/SIPTO local IP breakout • Monitoring/Improving Energy Efficiency (incl. Smart Metering) • Again, a HUGE number of fora! TISPAN compiles a "Who is Who" list of links, topics and status … trying to avoid duplication • A critical issue is existence of many different legacy systems,so some architecture(s) with Gateways need to be considered International Telecommunication Union
Challenges • Challenge #1: IMS or not ? • Only few networks have upgraded yet towards IMS. This may be due to (a) financial constraints (b) no clear killer-app (c) fear of a "heart transplant" on a running network (d) need to maintain/interface to legacy systems • Challenge #2: Explosion of Consumer Electronics in CPNs • The stone-age was "POTS", the bronze-age was "my PC with xDSL" • Now we have the age with "2 PCs, a netbook, a media-server, 2 IPTVs, a stereo-system using net-radio, a DigitalPictureFrame,someone uploading images from their camera, a mobile-phone synchronizing appointments, iPad, SmartMeters, ……. a “zillion” IP devices in the home network! Proposed Resolution [optional] • The GSC is invited to recognise that consumer electronics and home networks form a global ecosystem, so that even well-designed local/national specifications are no longer sufficient to foster interoperability. In order to promote greater efficiency in this ecosystem and in the standardization effort, more efforts are required to consolidate specification frameworks and improve global interoperability.
