  11. Ourselves – Forgiveness • Easy to read and say but perhaps the hardest obstacle in prayer. • However we must look to Jesus as our example. • Forgive Friends and enemies.

  13. Nonsense Prayers • Unforgiveness • Unconfessed Sins

  14. Proverbs 28:13 • 13 He who covers his sins will not prosper,But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.

  15. Isaiah 59:1-2 • 59 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened,That it cannot save;Nor His ear heavy,That it cannot hear.2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God;And your sins have hidden His face from you,So that He will not hear.

  16. Bad Example : The Old Testament • Israel had sinned and were not heard.

  17. Good Bible Examples • Ezra • Daniel • Nehemiah

  18. Ezra 9:6 • 6 and prayed: “I am too ashamed and disgraced, my God, to lift up my face to you, because our sins are higher than our heads and our guilt has reached to the heavens.

  19. Daniel 9:4-5 • 4 I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed: • “Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, 5 we have sinned and done wrong. We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away from your commands and laws.

  20. Ourselves – Confess Sin • We can criticise Israel but are we really that much better? • We can look at Paul Letters to see our faults • We must humble ourselves when we come to pray.

  22. Nonsense Prayers • Unforgiveness • Unconfessed Sins • Selfishness

  23. James 4:3 • 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.

  26. Bad Example – James & John Mother • 20 Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Him with her sons, kneeling down and asking something from Him. 21 And He said to her, “What do you wish?” She said to Him, “Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on your right hand and the other on the left, in your kingdom.” 22 But Jesus answered and said, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They said to Him, “We are able.”

  41. James 1:5-7 • 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.
