  1. Request PAR Submission Approval for Quality IP Study Group Proposal prepared by: Kathy Werner VSI Alliance President QIP SG Chair

  2. Study Group Progress • Contributors: • Freescale, Denali, IDT, Mentor, LSI, HP, Synopsys, edaCentrum, Booz Allen Hamilton • Freescale, Denali and Synopsys have all indicated willingness to join as Entity contributors • IDT, edaCentrum and HP are following up • Completed PAR and request approval from DASC and NesCom • PAR approved unanimously by SG after discussion and updates • Looking to mid-2008 draft completion

  3. PAR Summary • Base work on VSI donation of QIP • Develop schema to enable automation • Existing excel implementation available as example • Allows user defined fields for flexibility

  4. PAR Scope This specification defines a standard XML format for representing electronic IP quality information, based on an information model for electronic IP quality measurement. It includes a schema and the terms that are relevant for measuring electronic IP quality, including software that executes on the system. The schema and information model can be focused to represent particular categories of interest to IP users.

  5. PAR Purpose The purpose of this standard is to provide a unified view of quality measures for IP to facilitate the use and integration of this IP used in electronic system design. This will enable the continuous improvement of IP used for system design and verification by providing a mechanism for qualitative comparison between such IP. The standard IP quality measures and characteristic exchange format defined can be incorporated into a variety of EDA tools.

  6. PAR Need There are numerous ways and methodologies used to design and verify IP's resulting in a large variance in the quality of the IP. Adopting a quality standard metric that will account for the variances in designing, verifying and testing the IP will result in fair quality assessment and improved quality.

  7. Demonstrated Need • QIP adopted by leading IP providers and integrators (100’s of companies downloaded since 1/06) • QIP used as baseline metric in IP qualification tools • VIP Lane from SatinIP • IP Forensics from Atrenta • QIP supported on leading IP exchange portals • ChipEstimate • Design and Reuse • Enhancement requests still being received • Xilinx for FPGA applications

  8. Relationship to other IEEE standards • This proposal allows growth into new technology areas for IEEE/DASC • Quality metrics for IP • Quality metrics for IP related software • This proposal ties to other work in IEEE/DASC • IP descriptions in P1685 SPIRIT • IP Encryption • Possible extension to hands-on qualification labs. • Chance to extend membership to Fabs, IP suppliers, portals, etc.
