Why Golf in Schools Now? • The Golf Community is Interested • Untapped potential--access to 51 million kids • Will create a feeder system for structured community programs • Will create a need for more structured programs • Kids will influence their parents • The School Community is Interested • Learning Standards include lifetime sports • Want to get in on the opportunities • Kids are responding to the game
Getting into the Schools—How • Understand school culture – the potential and the limitations • Start with the pioneers • Need to assist schools with initial equipment purchase • Minimal ongoing costs • One teacher with average class size of 24 students • Teachers do not necessarily know golf • Incorporate golf learning aids • Equipment sets up and stores away easily • All kids must be engaged in activity at all times
School Program Components • Safety first – minimal equipment – short game instruction • A scoring system for games, competitions and to track progress • Always respect the integrity of the game • Golf scoring • Golf vocabulary • Golf etiquette • Golf rules • Incorporate a golf course field trip experience (trial) • Kids have FUN and experience success!

HOOK A KID ON GOLF PROGRAM TRAINING CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS SCHOOL GOLF PROGRAM Pilot Program Using SNAG School Golf Program GOLF COORDINATOR CPS SCHOOL COORDINATOR SCHOOL & PHYSICAL EDUCATORS’ SELECTION SNAG TRAINING HOOK A KID ON GOLF CLINICS, CPS AFTER SCHOOL GOLF PROGRAM, & OTHER JUNIOR GOLF PROGRAMS (THE FIRST TEE, CPS SUMMER CAMPS, AND OTHER OPPORTUNITIES (DOME) SNAG SCHOOL IMPLEMENTATION TRANSITION
Pilot Program Components Utilizing SNAG School Golf Program • Based on national physical education standards for motor skill development and motor learning. • Curriculum written for physical educators with or without golf background. • Curriculum manual + complete equipment package = teaching 48 students at one time, safe and effectively.

Transition to traditional golf through existing junior programs in the community…
2001-2002 Pilot Results • 20 schools selected = 12,000 students introduced to golf @ $4 per child • 20-25 students per school = 350 students selected to transition into traditional golf programs through Hook A Kid On Golf @ $130 per student • SNAG and Hook A Kid On Golf in schools highly successful. Course access and available golf teaching professionals created problems in transitional steps in traditional junior golf.
2002-2003 HIGHLIGHTS • Funding provided for building of dedicated junior facility on CPS site (in collaboration with the State of Illinois [Sen. Emil Jones, Jr.] and The First Tee) • 12 additional schools = 30 total(2 schools dropped out due toteacher transfers)
ADDITIONAL NECESSARY STEPS • Golf professionals visit schools to observe/assist with SNAG curriculum implementation and “Adopt A School” • Golf professionals attend SNAG training • Higher percentages of students transition into local jr. golf programs • Challenges: Transition into play • Support from the golf community • Golf professionals and teachers • Junior programs and access to facilities for play
