  4. How does immigration aim to meet Canada’s Workforce? • 2006-2007 Plans and Priorities article on pg. 168 of your textbook. • What are some of the reasons why Canada needs immigrants?

  5. What is the point system for accepting immigrants? • Applies only to economic immigrants. • If a person is not a refugee or a family-class immigrant, they must qualify under Canada’s point system to enter Canada as an immigrant. • Economic immigrants make up the biggest group of immigrants in Canada. (Graph on pg. 167) • Do Points assignment.

  6. How does health factor into qualifying as an immigrant? • Every potential economic immigrant must provide proof that they are in good health. A person may be refused if: • Their health could put the health of other Canadians at risk. • They have a condition that could endanger public safety. • Their health could put “excessive demand” on Canada’s health services. • Provide examples of each of these in your notes.

  7. What is Canada’s policy towards refugees? • See pg. 177 and read the objectives of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, 2002. • Imagine you are a refugee coming to Canada from Afghanistan. Write a journal entry speaking about how you think your life is going to change.

  8. How do individual and collective rights of Canadians influence immigration laws and policies? • What was the Singh Decision? • What were the results?

  9. Views and Perspectives of the Singh Decision • Read the perspectives of the Singh decision on pg. 182. • Write down your own opinion and support this using facts from what you have learned.

  10. How does immigration involve the collective rights of Aboriginal peoples? • Why should the Canadian government consult Aboriginal people before making a decision that may significantly shape the future of this country? • What are some of the issues that exist in some Aboriginal communities? • How can these issued affect the Canadian work force?

  11. What challenges and opportunities does immigration pose for Franco-Albertan communities? • Identify and explain one connection between the chart on pg. 180 and the perspectives of Frank McMahon and PaulinMulatris on pg. 185?

  12. How does immigration affect Canada’s cities and regions? • Answer the questions on pg. 187 to develop your understanding.

  13. Provincial Nomination Program • What does the Provincial Nomination Program allow provinces to do in terms of immigration?

  14. Canada – Quebec Accord • How does this accord offer ways for Quebec to affirm the use of the French language? Identify two specific ways. • Based on the information you have learned, to what extend is the Canada – Quebec accord beneficial to both Quebec, and Canada?
