  3. 1. BREAKING NEWS: THE POPE RESIGNS The Pope Benedict XVI, said he willresign at theend of themonth ,because of hisadvancedage (85 yearsold). He isthefirst pope who has steppeddown in nearly 600 years. "Strength of mind and body are necessary, strengthwhich in thelastfewmonths has deteriorated in me totheextentthat I havehadtorecognize my incapacitytoadequatelyfulfilltheministryentrustedto me," saidBenedict.   4. VATICAN CITY It was established as an independent state in 1929 by the Lateran Treaty. Vatican City State is distinct from the Holy See, which dates back to early Christianity and is the main episcopal see of 1.2 billion Latin and Eastern Catholic adherents around the globe. Ordinances of Vatican City are published in Italian; official documents of the Holy See are issued mainly in Latin. The two entities have distinct passports: the Holy See, not being a country, issues only diplomatic and service passports, whereas Vatican City State issues normal passports.   9. Who votes? • Elected by the College of Cardinals meeting in Conclave . • Only cardinals under age 80 are eligible. • In this case 115 men fit the bill and will vote Main Page

Whatisthe ritual? • Cardinals gather in the Pauline Chapel of the Apostolic Palace and file into the Sistine Chapel chanting the Litany of Saints and the Latin hymn "Veni Creator," imploring saints and the Holy Spirit to help them pick a pope. • Each cardinal places his hand on a book of the Gospels and pledges "with the greatest fidelity" never to reveal the details of the conclave Main Page

How do they vote? • Each cardinal writes his choice on a paper inscribed with the words "Eligo in summenpontificem," or "I elect as Supreme Pontiff’’ • They approach the altar one by one and say: "I call as my witness, Christ the Lord who will be my judge, that my vote is given to the one who, before God, I think should be elected". • The ballots are then bound together with a needle and burned in the chapel stove along with a chemical to produce either black or white smoke. What happens once the Pope is elected? • Once a cardinal has been elected pope, the master of liturgical ceremonies enters the Sistine Chapel and the senior cardinal asks "Do you accept your canonical election as Supreme Pontiff?“ • White smoke pours out of the Sistine Chapel chimney and bells of St. Peters toll. • In a change for this conclave, the new pope will stop and pray in the Pauline Chapel for a few minute.   15. Jorge Bergoglio Francis, was born as Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina on December 17th 1936. Bergogliois the 226th pope of the Catholic church. He was elected on March 13th 2013. He studied at Theological Faculty of San Miguel. He received licentiate in philosophy. He became a Jesuit on Dec. 13, 1969. No Jesuit priest has ever served as pontiff. Besides Spanish, Bergoglio also speaks Italian and German. Main Page

  16. Becomes a bishop He was ordained titular bishop of Auca and auxiliary of Buenos Aires on June 27, 1992. He became archbishop of Buenos Aires on Feb. 28, 1998. On Nov. 30, 1998, ‘’he became Ordinary for Eastern-rite faithful in Argentina who lack an Ordinary in their own rite.’’ Main Page
