  2. Purpose • Provide an overview of the factors involved in finalising the annual exam timetable • Timetable and dual running 2014 and 2015 arrangements • Present options for the exam timetable in steady state from 2016 • To hear your feedback and comments

  3. Designing the Examination Timetable • Timetable production starts 18 months before exams begin. The operational procedural programme and quality assurance procedures stem from the Timetable. • Based around entry patterns to avoid, as far as possible, coincident examinations and ‘exam overload’ for the majority of candidates. • Considers national issues not local issues e.g. local holidays.

Aim to distribute high uptake subjects evenly throughout the first 4-5 weeks of the Timetable. • Courses taught primarily in Colleges are placed at the end of the Timetable. • Previous Timetables covered 28-31 exam days with Standard Grade being completed first followed by Intermediate, Higher and Advanced Higher exams.

  6. 2014 and 2015 Examination Timetable • Standard Grade removed.Dual running of current and new National Qualifications. National 5 introduced in 2014. New Higher introduced in 2015. • External Advisory Group advised ‘no radical’ change to the Timetable during the 2014 and 2015 dual running years. • 28 day timetable both years. • Feedback on 2014 Timetable reflected in the 2015 Timetable.

  7. 2015 Timetable • A copy on your seat • Tuesday 28 April 2015 – Friday 5 June 2015 • No exams on Monday, 4 May 2015 • Certification Day – to be agreed • Published online in early July

  8. 2016 and beyond • Steady state position reached. Only National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher courses in Timetable. • Less externally assessed exams = less exam days? • Opportunity to: - Provide ‘additional time’ to prepare candidates for exams? - Further reduce coincident exams? - Ease exam load for candidates? • Must retain sufficient time for post examination quality assurance processes.

  9. Initial Thinking • 20 day exam timetable (9 May to 3 June 2016)? • English (85,000 entries) and Maths (73,000 entries) allocated one exam day each. • Other subjects with high entry levels will be allocated separate days where possible. • Develop ‘fixed’ exam days for subjects, e.g. English always on the second Thursday in May, etc?

  10. Next Steps • Ask schools and colleges for their views / comments. • Develop the draft 2016 Timetable taking cognisance of feedback received. • Present options to the Timetable External Advisory Group in Autumn 2014. • Publish 2016 Timetable during June 2015.
