Why Geography? • Geography is both a humanities and a science subject, so gives a very broad range of experience to any student. • Universities and employers like students who have studied Geography as geographers acquire a wide range of skills. • Geographers are taught about data collection and analysis, essay writing, mathematics and statistics, using GIS and ICT and a whole lot more besides.

Course Content – First Year Mix of human and physical modules: • Water and carbon cycles – rivers and climate change, and the link between changing climate and the water cycle • Contemporary Urban Environments – development and structure of cities from human and physical perspectives • Changing Places – the concept of place in Geography and how places have developed through time. • Geographical Skills – classroom and fieldwork-based

Course Content – Second Year Again a mix of human and physical: • Hazards – volcanoes, earthquakes, tropical cyclones, wildfires and their causes and consequences • Global Systems and Global Governance – global trade and corporations, international bodies and treaties • Hot Desert Systems and Landscapes – causes of desertification, the land features in deserts associated with water, wind and Man. • Independent geographical project on a subject of your choice, involving fieldwork.

Fieldwork • Currently we conduct fieldwork in the North York Moors, based on an overnight stay in the Cranedale Centre near Malton, supporting first year modules in Water & Carbon Cycles, Contemporary Urban Environments and Changing Places. • Day 1 is a river study in Dalby forest. • Day 2 is a study of microclimate in Scarborough or Beverley.

  15. Students do a quantitative and qualitative comparison of contrasting urban areas in Leeds, Harehills and Alwoodley.

What can it lead to? • Geography students go on to a wide range of careers, including working for the Environment Agency, quantity surveying, environmental analysis, planning, GIS, hazard management……….. • Past students on the Geography A-Level have gone on to study Earth Sciences, Physical Geography, Human Geography, Environmental Management and Environmental Science, as well as courses such as Law, English and Politics.
