  4. Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) • peptide hormone and neurotransmitter involved in the stress response • stimulates the synthesis and the secretion of ACTH in the corticotropin-producing cells (corticotrophs) of the anterior pituitary gland

  5. Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) • polypeptide tropic hormone produced and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland (corticotropic cell) • component of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and is often produced in response to biological stress • stimulates secretion of glucocorticoid steroid hormones from adrenal cortex

  6. Cortisol • steroid hormone, produced by the zona fasciculata of the adrenal cortex. • released in response to stress and a low level of blood glucocorticoids. • The release of cortisol is controlled by CRH and ACTH
