  3. ORIGINAL ORATORY Rules • Original Oratory may be persuasive or informative. Although many orations do deal with a problem and do propose a solution, this is not the only acceptable form of oratory. The oratory may alert the audience to a potential danger, strengthen dedication to an accepted cause, or eulogize a person. • The speech must be the original work of the speaker. Not more than 150 words of quoted material may be included. Quotes must be so designated in the manuscript. All sources from which material is quoted must be submitted to the speaker’s teacher.

  4. Guidelines Delivery The speaker must be familiar with the material. It should not be memorized, but neither should it be read. Students should make periodic eye contact with the text. Thought and composition should be judged on the basis of their effects as a speech performance, not as a written composition. Evaluation will be weighted 65 for content and 35 for delivery. Hand movement and vocal characterization should be kept to a minimum, and acting is discouraged. Timing Presentations should be between about 3 minutes (300 words).
