The late 1930s were pivotal in shaping contemporary European history as Adolf Hitler sought to expand Germany by absorbing Austria and Czechoslovakia into the Third Reich. On March 13, 1938, Austria was annexed in the Anschluss, backed by popular support. Encouraged by this success, Hitler aimed for the Sudetenland, leading to the Munich Conference where Britain and France, hoping to maintain peace, allowed the territorial concession. However, this policy of appeasement proved shortsighted, as Hitler's ambitions continued unabated, culminating in the complete takeover of Czechoslovakia in 1939.
