  6. Setting the Scene • Hitler: • Sudetenland • Occupies western half of Czechoslovakia • Mussolini • Albania • British and French • Appeasement- policy of granting concessions to potential enemies to maintain peace

  7. Invading Poland • FRA and GB agree to protect Poland March 31, 1939 • GRM & RUS • Nonaggression Pact 10 years • Sept 1, 1939 Hitler invades Poland • Sept 3, 1939 GB and FRA declare war on GRM

  8. Lightning War: Definitions • Panzer divisions = armored divisions • Blitzkreig= “lightning war”; air and land attack that took the enemy by surprise • Stuka- dive bombing warplane • Sitzkrieg= lull in fighting (“sit-down war”) • Luftwaffe= GRM airforce

War in the West • Maginot Line= massive string of fortifications along FRA’s border w/ GRM • 2 problems- protected only part of FRA/GRM boarder • Guns pointed east twd GRM • Attack through Belgium?? • GRM Attack • April 1940 Denmark & Norway • May 10 Netherlands (5 days), Belgium (3 weeks), LUX (1 day) • Then set their sights on FRA
