  1. Breaking down smokestacks: A research database that encourages faculty collaboration across disciplines Phillip Knutel, Ph.D. Bentley College Oct. 19, 2006

  2. Another stupid excuse for not just talking to people, clearly invented by IT dregs and accountants Title this presentation should have, if Larry Prusak named it

  3. Goals of Faculty Research Database • Finding experts at Bentley from off-campus – research colleagues, consultants, media quotes, expert witnesses, etc. • Greater awareness by other institutions and prospective students of our faculty expertise • Leveraging internal expertise – foster trans-disciplinary faculty research projects • Accreditation reports • Annual activity reports • Output as Word doc to serve as faculty CVs

  4. Pre-FRD • Faculty posted a lot, little, or nothing about their areas of expertise • No consistent format/information • Not updated for years (decades?) • Faculty who had left years ago still listed • New faculty not listed for a long time • Wanted more professional faculty profiles • Snoopy cartoons as their image

  5. Locating Expertise? • Ways of demonstrating expertise • Scholarly research papers/presentations • Time to publishing may = past expertise • Current research interests • Practitioner-oriented papers/presentations • Teaching • Consulting • Different spin, terminology, industry/academic buzzwords

  6. Initial Data Loading • Ideally, would allow faculty to upload Word docs of CV • Not exactly an XML-tagged world here, so recognizing fields an issue • Basic info - name, terminal degree, title pulled from HR/admin Oracle DB • Rest typed in, field by brutal field • Finally hired temps to do it for those who wouldn’t

  7. Building the System • 12-18 months of meetings, buy-in, and development/pilot testing iterations • Utilized existing Banner/Oracle DB • Security/hacking • In-house support • COTS systems not universally popular • Current version

  8. Goals Met? • Finding experts at Bentley from off-campus – research colleagues, consultants, media quotes, expert witnesses, etc. • Greater awareness by other institutions and prospective students of our faculty expertise • Leveraging internal expertise – faculty research projects • Accreditation reports • Annual activity reports • Output as Word doc to serve as faculty CVs
