  1. Each part of the spiritual body is indispensable. • 1 Cor 12:21-26. • Paul seems to speak about our roles in the body. • The body at Corinth was not one. • To help them achieve real unity, Paul writes about the “One Body.”

  2. One Body v 12

  3. “As the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.” • The word “one” occurs five times in these two verses! • Throughout the Scriptures, we are urged to create the true unity being one body represents. • We are to “[endeavor] to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Eph 4:3). • “Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel” (Phil 1:27).

  4. “All the members of the body, though many, are one body.”

  5. There are different talents. • 1 Cor 3:6-7. • Col 4:10-11.

  6. One Baptism v 13

  7. “By one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free.” • The Spirit is highly active in the conversion process (Jn 3:5; Tit 3:5). • The Spirit’s role in baptism has to do with His making us new people (Ezek 36:36-37; Gal 5:22-23). • Paul emphasizes the oneness of the Spirit and the oneness of the body.

  8. Baptized by one Spirit into one body, regardless of race or class. • There is no place for division over someone’s ethnic background in the church of our Lord (Gen 1:27; Acts 17:26). • There is also no way that a Christian can participate in social division (Js 2:1-7).

  9. One Beverage v 13c

  10. We “have all been made to drink into one Spirit.” • Why drink of the Spirit? • In Scripture, “water” often stands for spiritual life and vitality: e.g., Jn 4:13-14. • Jesus also equates the Spirit with living water: Jn 7:37-39. • How do we drink of the Spirit? • I think this refers to the non-miraculous indwelling of the Spirit. • “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38).

  11. What does drinking the Spirit have to do with us? • Paul’s emphasis is on the one body. • Because we all have the indwelling of the Spirit, we are equals.
