  4. Email You will be assigned a UTMB e-mail account upon acceptance. Once you are accepted as a student here, all official school e-mails will be sent to your account address.   5. Email Click on the webmail link. Login using your UTMB username and password. If you are unable to login to the webmail system or can not remember your password, you will need to call the helpdesk at 409-772-5200

  7. Getting Email on IPhone and Android • Mail can be received on either the iPhone or an Android phone.   13. Rules for Passwords Rules are highlighted below. Passwords EXPIRE after 90 days but can be changed sooner. Your account will become inactivated if not used in 90 days. This will require a reinstatement by your department’s Trusted Requestor.

  14. Software • Software can be purchased at the bookstore for pc’s and mac’s and can only be installed once due to UTMB’s discounted price from Microsoft. • Microsoft Office 2010 and 2013 is available for the pc and the mac. • For distance students who need to purchase software through the bookstore, you can follow the instructions at the following link: http://www.utmb.edu/IS/isbusops/CampusEnterpriseAgreementInformation.aspx • More information can also be found at http://ar.utmb.edu/studentinfo/bookstore.htm

  15. Antivirus Software • UTMB is licensed to provide Microsoft’s Forefront anti-virus client software.  A copy can be picked up in the Office of Information Security (Administration Building, 4th floor, rm. 4.126) or it can be downloaded from the Microsoft website (same cost: $0) as part of Microsoft’s Security Essentials.  • Security Essentials is available at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download, and contains a couple of other utilities which may be useful for you.

Wireless Access • Wireless access points are on all floors of the SHP building as well as in some other buildings. • The Link to setup wireless on laptops is http://www.utmb.edu/IS/wireless/default.aspx • Can also call the helpdesk for wireless setup assistance. Will need to have a current antivirus and all updates to access internet. • UTMBais needed to access UTMB network resources--blackboard • UTMBguest is for outside vendors

  17. UTMBa Wireless setup for devices • For IPhones and IPads • Touch "Settings" on your iPhone and open "Wi-Fi Networks." Under "Choose a Network…" select "UTMBa." Enter your UTMB username (utmb-users-m username) and your password. • For Android Devices • Touch “Settings”. Click on “Wireless & Networks”. Check the Wi-Fi box. Click on “Wi-Fi settings”. Choose “UTMBa”. Enter UTMB username and your password.

UTMB alerts!Emergency Notification System Registration instructions for UTMB alerts! at http://www.utmb.edu/emergency_plan/utmbalerts/ The service is only activated in an emergency situation when there is a risk of significant harm or an urgent threat. When such a threat occurs, a brief message will be sent to those subscribed to the system, updating them or instructing them to seek additional information from other existing university information sources.

  19. Student Computer Support Desktop support is provided for students on personal computers/laptops on a walk-in basis. Service is provided at the following locations during the hours designated.   20. Blackboard 9.1 Web-based access to courses from all four UTMB schools is provided by the Blackboard course management system. Blackboard courses can include many web-based course tools including announcements, blogs, contacts, calendars, discussion boards, glossaries, journals, messages, tasks, tests, assignments, audio messaging, and wikis, as well as course content files. Since Blackboard is web-based, your internet browser must be configured properly to allow all features to work as designed. Java, Flash, Javascript, and security settings are often necessary to fully utilize Blackboard courses. Some software installation may also be necessary, e.g. lockdown browser software to facilitate web-based exams in Blackboard. Tools like Bacus Virtual Microscopy require properly installed and configured Java. See the link below for information on browser configuration.
