  2. What is BAVD? • The bicuspid aortic valve only has two leaflets instead of three, limiting the functionality of the valve and the flow of blood

  3. Causes and Symptoms • Causes are not completely known but defect in valve is known at birth • Symptoms are not diagnosed until adulthood • Can go unnoticed for years • Shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pain, or fainting caused by inadequate blood flow to the brain • Surgical repair must be performed at birth if the defect is known, if not people can go without knowing they have the defect • Surgery if done later will be done during the patient’s 30s or 40s

  4. Interesting Facts • About 2% of the population had BAVD • Twice as common in males as females • Less than a 1% mortality rate • 91% of patients do not need another valve operation within the next 10 years
