THE COSMOS • The COSMOSis the organisedstructure of the wholeuniverse • It is compared to an animated and organisedbeing(everything has a place and a function). • We all living and non-livingare part of thisCosmos, part of thisDivine entity.* • It is in itselfharmonious, perfectlyorganised and beautiful(…If weknowhow to contemplate it!) =*Pantheism/Hylozoism= ”materia is a livinganimal” (”hyle”+ ”zoon”= materia + animal)

THEORIA • = ”The contemplation of the Cosmicorder” ”THEION + ORAO (= the Divine+ I see) We must contemplatethe Divine*in the reel worldwhichsurroundsus, (the Cosmos) For example, studyingphysics or astronomy or bologyshouldhelpussee thisDivine organisation of the world ”In theory” means in itsmodern version in a perfect situation *”The Divine” heremeanswhat is not human but marvellous.

  7. The LOGOS • The structure of the universe is not only ”Divine ” and perfect, but it is also ”RATIONEL”. THE LOGOS IS THE ADMIRABLE ORDER OF THINGS • And this is precisely the role of our reasonings skills: To beable to discover, like a biologist dissequating a rat… lookinginto the perfection and arrangment of all organs) *Logos= Will becomeLogic!/ REASON

  8. Conclusion ?NATURE IS THE NORM • Since The logos is the admirable order of things… THE GREEK WORLD WAS AN ARISTOCRATIC WORLD WHICH INTRISIQUELY CONTAINED THE NOTION OF HIERARCHIES OF VIRTUES ( Talents) = Someareborn to rule (Men!) others to obey (Slaves)!

  9. The nature of NATURE • Nature is fondamentalyinegalitarian and hierarchical: • Weare more or lessnaturlytalented…. ….From verystrong, beautiful, intelligent, healthy, fast, tall,etc… to ….. Lesstalented, tall, beautiful, intelligent, etc …..

  10. THE CHRISTAN REVOLUTION The moral value of an individualdoes not depend on his talent, natural gifts…. ….. But whathedoes with it ! Beautycanbeused at the service of good… and evil

  11. A REVOLUTIONARY IDEA! We have the liberty to choose (how to usewhat nature has given us! )

So, a moderninheritage Is found in the Declaration of the Human Rights (1789) IT IS OUR LIBERTY AND NOT NATURE WHICH IS THE MAINSTAY OF OUR MORAL CODEX • “All human beings are born equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscienceand should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.“ (Art. 1)

  14. CONSCIENCE Weshouldfollow the spiritratherthan the letter of a moral code ”Parable of the adulterouswoman” = Useyourconscience ! (internal forum!)

  16. UNIVERSALISM • If freewill is at the basics of our moral actions • Thenweare all equal = we have equaldignity • Weare all ”BROTHERS” • Then, weonly have onehumanity The Christian religion is then the first to have defined A UNIVERSAL MORALITY
