  2. Back ground • Born on February 8, 1820, in New York and died on February 14, 1891. • American soldier, educator, author. • 10 siblings • General in Union army • Know for superb military strategy

  3. Role in war • Sherman conducted total war meaning that he did and destroyed everything he could in order to win the war. • Destroyed railroads and all available recourses. • Helped lackluster military of the Union to flourish.

  4. Impact on war • Sherman became the Union military commander of the western theater in 1864. He led his troops on a march south to capture the city of Atlanta, Georgia. • During this march, Sherman and his men burned and destroyed everything they could. All armies in the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida surrendered to him in 1965 drawing attention to the Confederacy’s inability to fight much longer, helping the Union win the Civil War.
