  2. WillamBarret Travis • He had green eyes, brown hair, and was of average build. • He also appears to have had a small head.

Early Life • William Travis was born on August 1 or 9 1809. • He was born near Saluda, South Carolina. • Travis had eleven younger siblings. • Travis attended an academy in Sparta, Alabama until he knew all there was to learn at that school. He then attended school in Claiborne, Alabama before becoming an attorney’s apprentice.

  4. Adulthood • William Travis married a women named Rosanna Cato. • Travis had a son named Charles E. Travis and a daughter named Susan Isabella. • Travis was employed as an attorney.

  5. Travis’s Role in the Texas Revolution • Travis first served as a member of the Alabama Militia. • He later served in the Army as a member of the cavalry, where he was promoted to head of recruiting. • Eventually he was the Commander of the Revolution’s forces at the Battle of the Alamo in San Antonio.

  6. Final years • William Travis died on March 6, 1836. • Travis died at the Battle of the Alamo when he was shot in the head by a Mexican soldier.

Interesting facts • William Travis was considered a trouble maker among many of the Texas settlers. • When he joined the military, he abandoned his wife, son, and unborn daughter in Alabama. • The reason Travis commanded the Battle of the Alamo was because his superior officer left. Initially, he was supposed to have joint command with James Bowie but was given full command when Bowie began to feel ill.

Why was Travis important to the Texas revolution • Travis did not make a very major contribution to the Texas Revolution when compared to other military officers, except for the fact that he was the Chief Recruiting Officer for the Army. • He was well liked and respected by the troops under his command. • He became famous for his contributions only because he was the commanding officer at the Battle of the Alamo.
