  3. The Secular Memorial Day • Originally called “Decoration Day” • First observed on May 30, 1868 when flowers were placed on graves of Union & Confederate soldiers at Arlington Nat’l Cemetery • After WW1, holiday was changed to honor all Americans who died fighting in any war

The Secular Memorial Day • Since the late 1950’s, on the Thurs. before Memorial Day (last Mon. in May), the 1,200 soldiers of 3rd U.S. Infantry serve in a special way: • They place small American flags at each of more than 300,000 gravestones at Arlington Cemetery • They then patrol 24 hours a day during the entire weekend to ensure no flag falls to the ground

  7. The Spiritual Memorial Day • First observed in Jerusalem in the year 30 A.D. on Pentecost (May-June) Acts 2:41-42 • Thereafter, it has been observed every first day of the week when the disciples of Jesus Christ in any given local area “come together to break bread” Acts 20:7

  8. The Spiritual Memorial Day • Its purpose is to memorialize the greatest event in human history…the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ 1 Cor 11:20-34 • A proclamation of His death and eventual return v. 26 • A solemn occasion requiring diligence for proper observance vv. 27-29

Gal 2:21 1 Cor 1:17 Eph 1:15-21
