  6. Class Exercise • Grab your “Tools” toolbar and dock it between the Table of Contents and the Map View. • Now hide that toolbar. Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  7. Table of Contents • The ArcMap Table of Contents contains three tabs, each with its own function. • Display tab • Arrange layers, view legends, expand and collapse layer views. Does NOT list tables. • Source tab • View the GIS file source of the layer. Lists tables. • Selection tab • Turn selectable layers on and off. Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  8. Display Area • Two types of views: • Data View • Layout View (shown) Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  9. Creating an ArcMap Project • What is a “Project”? • Has an .mxd file extension • A set of rules and pointers to data • Does not contain data itself • Saves symbology, layer order, layout design, graphics, labels Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  10. Types of Data • Shapefiles (.shp) • Geodatabases • Personal (.mdb) geodatabase feature classes • File (.gdb) geodatabase feature classes • SDE feature classes • Explanation of Layer (.lyr) Files • Layer Files specify certain properties for layers. • Can be Group Layers or Single Layers Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  11. Shapefiles (.shp) Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  12. Geodatabase Feature Classes Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  13. SDE Feature Classes Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  14. SDE Layer Files (.lyr) Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  15. 3 Ways to Add Data: • Add Data Button • Drag and Drop from ArcCatalog • Drag and Drop SDE layers from Windows Explorer (recommended option). Visit R:\ArcSDE_Data\[category] • Options for Adding Data: • Check off initial Layer display. Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  16. Saving Your Project Always save your project as soon as possible and frequently thereafter! Click File, Save or File, Save As Type a name and location for your project. Introduction to ArcMap 9.3 16

  17. Navigation and Other Basic Tools Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  18. The Table of Contents • Displaying Data • Data Frames and Their Properties • Layer Properties Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  19. Displaying Data • Expand and Collapse Layers • Viewing the Legend • Initial View / Scale thresholds • Changing the Drawing Order Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  20. Data Frames and Their Properties • What is a Data Frame? • Contains Common Properties, e.g. Coordinate System • How To Set Properties • Why Multiple Data Frames? Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  21. Properties of a Datalayer • Numerous tabs allow for total control over the display of your Layer. • General Fields* • Source Definition Query* • Selection* Labels* • Display Joins and Relates* • Symbology • * Not discussed in this workshop Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  22. General Tab • Layer Name • Rename layer. • Scale Range • Decide at which scales your data • will be displayed. Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  23. Source Tab • Sets your data source. Can be from any available local, removable or network drive. Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  24. Display Tab • Turn Map Tips on or off. • Scales symbols when using a • reference scale. • Sets the layer’s transparency level. Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  25. Symbology Tab • Defines symbols for your layer. • Style • Color • Size • Fill • Masking • etc. Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  26. Symbolizing Data Five ways to symbolize your data: Features Categories Quantities Charts* Multiple Attributes* *Not discussed in this class Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  27. Symbolizing Data • Features • Only one symbol per layer • Example: • Railroads Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  28. Symbolizing Data • Categories • Symbolize your data based on values from a field in your table. • Unique Values • Unique Values, many fields • Match to symbols in a style Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  29. Symbolizing Data Example of Symbolizing with Categories: DEP Properties Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  30. Symbolizing Data • Quantities • Symbolize your data based on quantities (numeric values) from a field in your table. • Graduated colors or symbols • Proportional symbols • Dot density Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  31. Symbolizing Data Quantities Example: Area in square miles of Connecticut towns. Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  32. Tables • Tables store the attribute data of your GIS features. • Table functions: • Open Table and View Contents • Show and Hide Columns • Calculate Fields • Select a user defined set of records • Join and Relate Tables Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  33. Table for DEP Property Layer Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  34. Select Records That Meet Certain Criteria For example, here only Shenipsit State Forest properties are selected. Size of each parcel in acres is calculated. Introduction to ArcMap 9.3

  35. The Importance of Metadata Metadata is information about the actual datalayer. It is important to know how, why, and when the data was created. In the example below, suppose we need to find out what the AV_Legend field is. Right click on the DEP Property layer name in the Table of Contents, choose Data, View Metadata and scroll down to Attribute Information. Introduction to ArcMap 9.3
