A Lake Management Plan is a strategic action plan developed by the lake community to preserve the unique character of their lake. It identifies lake values, promotes community engagement, and sets goals for protection and enhancement. While it cannot enforce regulations or change behaviors directly, it fosters communication, education, and collaboration among partners. This inclusive process motivates community involvement and stewardship, ultimately leading to successful lake management. What is a Lake Management Plan? It’s a Strategic ActionPlan developed by the lake community to reflect and preserve the special character of their lake
What can a Lake Management Plan do? • Identifies and protects the lake values • Promotes community discussion, education, consensus and action • Sets goals and objectives for the protection and enhancement of your lake • Protects your investment • Can define the carrying capacity and recommend land use policy • Recommends stewardship action
What can't a Lake Management Plan do? • Make people or community partners change behaviours • Enforce regulations • Implement action strategies • Wave a magic wand and make everything the way everyone wants it
Forcing people to comply rarely works and enforcement is expensive TRY COMMUNICATION, EDUCATION AND ACTION! • It is a longer process but in the end you are more likely to be successful • You will build enthusiasm and motivate the community to become involved = more volunteers, better stewards SUCCESS
Process Communication & Education • Process of bringing all community partners to the table • Promote communication between partners • Vision • Values and Issues • Questions people will ask • What is a lake plan? • How can a lake plan be used? • Who will use the plan?
What are your expectations of a lake management plan?
