INTRODUCTION • Computer • It is a device capable of performing computations and making logical decisions at high speed and accuracy • Computers process data under the control of sets of instructions called computer programs • Program • a sequence of instructions to be executed by computer
Hardware • Various devices comprising a computer • Keyboard, screen, mouse, disks, memory, CD-ROM, and processing units • Software • Programs that run on a computer
HISTORY • Abacus – reffered as first computer (mechanical) • Other mechanical machines designed by Pascal, Leibnitz etc – do basic calculations. • First electronic digital computer – John Atanasoff at Lowa State University (1939) • Howard Aiken designed electromechanical computer – use electric relays • 1943 – ENIAC announced – use vacuum tubes • 1946 – Dr. Van Neumann introduced “stored-program computer” concept http://history.sandiego.edu/gen/recording/computer1.html
