Juniors (P2 assembly first then second period) • Warm-up:Read OR novelorStudy for vocabulary quiz (no new vocabulary this week; make up test for units 1-2 will be given in class on Friday) • Vocabulary quiz • Finish Ben Franklin’s Autobiography a. Copy definition of APHORISM onto the paper with your other literary devices (the last device you wrote the definition for was figurative language) (you CAN write on the back of this paper) 4. Begin “Speech to the Virginia Convention” by Patrick Henry • copy definition of persuasion from box on page 79 HW: IRA #1 DUE: 10/2 HW: OR and copy down examples of your literary device

Junior Weekly Preview Tomorrow (Tuesday): finish “Speech…” and annotate and summarize it (this will help you with the skills you need to use on your IRA) Wednesday: (Chromebooks)—Finish short constructed response from last Wednesday (?); literary device/double entry journal WS for OR novel Thursday:SSR day for OR novel (no book=alternative assignment worth ½ points) Friday: Make-up test Unit I (weeks 1 and 2);

  7. Poetry Guidelines • A minimum of 10 lines • A message to a younger sibling or friend about life; reveal your thoughts and feelings about life like the narrator of “Mother to Son” did • DOES NOT have to rhyme • Can use teenager speak if you want; let her speech pattern inspire you

Dramatic Monologue—”Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes • If you had to guess what inspired him to write the poem (same question I asked when we studied “The Lottery”) what do you think it would be? • Think about “Mother” and “Thank You”. Is there an implicit commentary about society in these selections? What is it? Provide direct evidence.
