  1. Metadata Support for Model Intercomparison Projects Sylvia Murphy: murphys@ucar.edu Cecelia DeLuca: cdeluca@ucar.edu Julien Chastang:chastang@ucar.edu Luca Cinquini: luca@ucar.edu http://www.earthsystemcurator.org/ http://dycore.ucar.edu

  2. Outline • Earth System Modeling Infrastructure • What is Curator • Curator and ESG support to the Dycore Workshop • Demonstration: • How to search for dynamical cores • How to look at models, simulations, and experiments • How to create a comparison table

  3. Earth System Modeling Infrastructure (ESMI) Metadata ESMF data structures and standardized interfaces XML Interoperability Database Workflow Web services Search/Browse System Configuration Tools Compare Download

  4. What is Curator • The Earth System Curator project, in partnership with the Earth System Grid (ESG), is building a web portal that links model components and data together via metadata. • The portal enables components, models, simulations, and data to be searched, browsed, downloaded, and compared. • The portal and metadata were used to support the ASP 2008 Colloquium • Project is part of the larger ESMI effort. Cecelia Deluca is the PI, Sylvia Murphy is the project manager. • The portal is planned for use in IPCC AR5 as part of ESG. • Other partners include ESMF, Georgia Tech, GFDL, and members of the European model metadata community.

  5. ASP 2008 Colloquium: Numerical Techniques for Global Atmospheric Models • 10 modeling groups with 11 atmospheric dycore components • Running 22 test cases at up to 5 resolutions • Component comparison table • Automated upload of simulation data, publishing, and comparison • Current PCMDI tables are static, hard-coded, non-searchable • Data search and browse via ESG Gateway • Presentation on use of metadata for MIPs for student attendees

  6. Workshop Gateway http://dycore.ucar.edu/

  7. Table Comparison Interface

  8. Table Comparison Details • Select model components • Select criteria • Table generated dynamically • Eventually selections can be placed in a user’s saved workspace http://dycore.ucar.edu/query/modelComparison.htm
