WE NEED YOU! • Shortage of physician-scientists in the U.S. • Opportunity to improve current therapies and develop new treatment modalities • Physician-scientists have unique ability to translate new discoveries from bench to bedside and back • Make a difference in patients’ lives

  2. WHY DO RESEARCH? CAREER ENHANCEMENT • Get into a competitive residency program • Gain a faculty position at an academic institution • Become a better physician • Give back to the community by helping find cures for diseases and saving lives Research Scholar Felix Gonzalez works on a therapeutic intervention for acute myocardial infarction at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. His research has resulted in upcoming clinical trials and may result in a life-saving intervention for heart patients.

U.S. citizenship not required In good standing at a U.S. medical or dental school Not currently enrolled in an M.D./Ph.D. program Cannot have a Ph.D. in a laboratory-based biomedical science Do not have to be from a research-oriented school or have prior research experience Research Scholars Program only: must be legally eligible to work in the United States (Research Scholars become HHMI employees) ELIGIBILITY

  4. WHERE DO YOU WANT TO DO RESEARCH? Your research may be a basic, translational or appliedbiomedical project. • Research Scholarswork at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus in Bethesda, MD • Medical Fellowswork at any academic or non-profit research institution in the U.S., except the NIH

  5. RESEARCH LOCATION Research Scholars • Choose from laboratories at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland • Furnished housing on the NIH campus at the “Cloister” includes housewares, cable TV, internet access, one parking space, and many other amenities • Enjoy living in a community with other Scholars

  6. Medical Fellows • Work at any academic or nonprofit research institution in the U.S., except the NIH • Research may be conducted abroad if mentor is affiliated with a U.S. institution • Spend a year doing research without being displaced from your local surroundings

Medical Fellows • Mentor and project chosen before you apply • Selection of mentor and research project are key components of the application process • Opportunity to work with either established or new mentor Medical Fellow, Xavier Garcia-Rojas with his mentor, Dr. Brendan Lee at Baylor College of Medicine

  9. SCIENTIFIC TALKS AND MEETINGS Both programs provide you with numerous opportunities to attend scientific talks and meetings to: • Learn about the latest scientific discoveries • Present your research • Network and socialize, with other student researchers and renowned scientists

  10. CLOISTER SCIENCE DINNERS • Research Scholars • Monday night lectures by renowned HHMI and NIH investigators • Personal interaction with speakers during reception and dinner • Informal discussion after dinner

  11. CLOISTER INFORMAL SCIENCE DINNERS • Two to three Scholars present their work each week to an all-Scholar audience • Receive feedback on your project and suggestions from other Scholars • Gain exposure to other fields • Practice presenting your work Research Scholars

  12. OTHER HHMI SCIENCE EVENTS • Special attendance at an HHMI science meeting at Janelia Farm Research Campus with HHMI investigators • Scientific Presentations – end of May

  13. Medical Fellows • Travel to the Washington D.C. area twice during the fellowship year to network and share scientific research • Utilize allowances to defray costs of travel to other professional meetings

  14. Research Scholars Annual compensation of $25,000, health & life insurance Furnished housing and utilities; computer provided Round-trip moving expense reimbursement Funds for books, courses, and travel to scientific meetings Medical Fellows Annual stipend of $25,000 $5,500 fellow’s allowance may be used for health care and tuition & fees $5,500 research allowance for computer-related expenses, scientific meetings, books, and other research-related expenses FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Some schools have special status under which students can remain enrolled; fees vary per school Check with registrar and financial aid office For those who do not maintain their enrollment in school, HHMI can help complete deferment forms (request from your loan servicing center) The majority of students defer their loans LOAN DEFERMENT

Research Scholars 168 applicants from 78 schools 82 interviewed from 48 schools 42 accepted from 32 schools PROGRAM STATISTICS (2006-2007) • Medical Fellows • 200 applicants from 54 schools • 66 accepted from 26 schools Applications from all qualified candidates are welcome and women and under-represented minorities are encouraged to apply. Females and under-represented minorities are proportionately represented among awardees to both programs.

  18. Membership consists of all current and former Fellows and Research Scholars from HHMI’s graduate programs Form collaborations and gain valuable resources for career planning Alumni-organized events throughout the country (e.g., seminars, workshops, socials) ALUMNI NETWORK
