  1. Journey With the Spirit Initiation

  2. The Beginning • Baptism: • When we are infants, we are not able to make our own baptismal promises, so our parents and godparents do this for us. • Baptismal Promises • To accept responsibility to train us in the Faith • To bring us to keep God’s commandments by loving Him and our neighbors • To keep us safe from sin so God’s life in us will grow stronger.

  3. God’s Promise • Covenant – A solemn promise between God and a person or community. • Each person involved has a part to play in this Covenant • God’s Promise: • - He will always be present and faithful • He invites us to be his children • He gives us grace Our Promise: - Turn from sin and be faithful to God

  4. Covenants • Noah’s Covenant • God won’t destroy the world again by a flood • Genesis 9:11 • Abraham’s Covenant • “I will make of you a great nation and I will bless you” • Genesis 12:7 • Moses’s Covenant • Gives us the Ten Commandments • Obey these and I will take care of you – God • Exodus 34:10 (roughly)

  5. New Covenant • The greatest Covenant was yet to come – Jesus • By Jesus coming into the world, He continues to show how, while we don’t always keep up our end of the bargain, God always does.

  6. How do we keep the Covenant? • Live out the Baptismal Promises • Worship God • Pray • Care for the sick and poor • Live according to Jesus’ teachings • Importance of both faith AND words in being Catholic

  7. Initiation • What are groups you are a part of? • How did you get into those groups? • Sacraments of Initiation • Bring us into and then continually further into the faith • Baptism • Confirmation • Eucharist

  8. Initiation • Baptism • Takes away original sin • Makes us children of God • We receive the Holy Spirit • Confirmation • Completes the graces from Baptism • Strengthens the Holy Spirit within us • In both of these we receive an Indelible Mark on our souls

  9. Initiation • Eucharist • This is the Source and Summit of our Faith • While we only receive Baptism and Confirmation once, Eucharist is received daily. • We are required to attend Mass weekly • Every time we take part in Mass, we are invited to grow more deeply in the Sacrament • When we take part in these Sacraments, we always keep in mind our Baptismal promises.
