  1. Come to Mount Zion, Heavenly Jerusalem A Place Of Intimate Worship

  2. You have not come Mt. Sinai • Hebrews 12:18-24 “18For you have not come to a mountain that can be touched and to a blazing fire, and to darkness and gloom and whirlwind, 19 and to the blast of a trumpet and the sound of words which sound was such that those who heard begged that no further word be spoken to them. 20 For they could not bear the command, "IF EVEN A BEAST TOUCHES THE MOUNTAIN, IT WILL BE STONED." 21 And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, "I AM FULL OF FEAR and trembling."

  3. You Have Come Heavenly Jerusalem • “22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, 23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel.“

  4. Contrast of 2 Covenants • The covenant of the Law given at Mt. Sinai, kept men at a distance • The new covenant of Jesus brings us into heavenly places • The worshippers at Mt. Sinai worshipped at a distance • The worshippers in the new covenant worship God up close in heavenly places • What is the “new covenant” difference that brings men close to God?

  5. Law by Moses, Grace by Jesus • John 1:14-17 “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 John testified about Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.'" 16 For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. 17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.”

  6. The Divine solution • John 1:14 “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, …full of grace and truth.” (“…the Word was God”, John 1.1) • “the Law was given through Moses” John 1.17 • The Law revealed that man was stuck & couldn’t change – and God Himself would become the solution (both in death & in life) • The “Word become flesh” – the Divine enters the human struggle – to bring a new covenant

  7. “Grace upon grace” • “For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.” John 1.16-17 • NT solution is “grace upon grace” vs. the Law’s approach of “demand upon demand” • The Law pointed out man’s short comings through our transgressions of it • Jesus would bring “grace upon grace”, to provides us with a new resource to pursue & embrace change

  8. Grace brings us to “heavenly places” • Ephesians 2.4-7 “4 But God …5 … made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus … 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.” • NT worship begins in the discovery of where grace has brought us

  9. “You’re already there” • Hebrews 12.22 “you have come … to heavenly Jerusalem” (a completed action, perfect tense) • Ephesians 2.6: “and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus” (seated – past tense, aorist tense) • Grace says: “you’re already there” -- don’t worship from afar but worship up close, in heavenly places – a progressive reality

  10. Law Brings Wrath But Grace Assurance • Romans 4:13-16 “13 For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if those who are of the Law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise is nullified; 15for the Law brings about wrath, but where there is no law, there also is no violation.”

  11. Law Brings Wrath But Grace Assurance • Romans 4:16 “16 For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all”

  12. Abraham received by faith alone • “13 For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith.” • Abraham’s faith in God’s promises to him “was credited as righteousness” (Romans 4.9, Genesis 15.6) • 13“not through the Law” … 15 “for the Law brings about wrath” (due to “violation”) • “…for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin” Romans 3:20

  13. Grace makes promises sure • “For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendents” Romans 4.16 • “by faith” is synonymous with “by grace” • Because “grace” is a gift, you can be sure of, it, in that it’s not something you work for • Grace & faith brings assurance, while the Law brings “wrath” & uncertainty, because of transgressions

  14. How Can We Be Sure We Are “Up The Hill” Already? • “13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation-- having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory.” Ephesians 1.13-.14

  15. How Can We Be Sure We Are “Up The Hill” Already? • “21 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God, 22 who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge.” 2Corinthians 1.21-.22 • The gift of the Spirit is both a “seal” & a “pledge” – of engagement (arrabon)

  16. The Spirit & Worship • In Revelation 1:10, John says “I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud voice …” • John’s sees a vision of Jesus & gets a message “to the seven churches in Asia” • Then in Revelation 4:1-2, he sees a door to heaven, and a voice says “Come up here” and again John says v.2 “Immediately I was in the Spirit” & more revelation occurs

  17. John sees heavenly worship • John sees “living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him” and “twenty-four elders … worship Him who lives forever and ever, and will cast their crowns before the throne …" Revelation 4:9-10 • John sees first hand Hebrews 12.22-23: “…heavenly Jerusalem … myriads of angels … the general assembly and church of the firstborn” in person by being “in the Spirit”

  18. Pentecost brought heavenly worship • Pentecost was both a day of heavenly visitation & heavenly worship • Acts 2.11: onlookers said “11 …we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God. " • Paul speaks of worshipping “in the Spirit” in tongues, 1Corinthians 14.16-.17 • Paul: “for we are the true circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus …” Philippians 3.3

  19. Blood better than Abel • “You have come to … the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel” • Genesis 4.10-.11, infers Abel’s blood was crying out for justice (e.g. curse spoken) • Jesus on the cross: “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." Luke 23.34 (forgiveness spoken) • Jesus’ sinless blood cries out then & now for mercy & for grace – not justice • Jesus’ blood alone can give us confidence to access heaven now & forever

  20. A New Covenant Invitation To Worship • Worship because the blood of Jesus draws you close to God & gives you confident access to Him • Worship because God’s grace has already brought you to heavenly places • Worship because God’s grace makes His promises secure for you • Worship because nearness to God is what will transform you to become like Him
