Japan under MacArthur • Japanese Emperor loses all political power • Occupation forces introduced new social reforms • Opened education system to all people • Equality for women • Land-Reform Program – bought out large landowners and gave the land to landless farmers • Rebuilt Japanese economy

Japan develops democracy • In 1952 the US ended occupaion and signed a pace treaty with Japan • Military forces maintained bases in Japan and protected it with nuclear weapons • Become trading partners • Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) dominates the gov’t in 1950s to the 1990s • Coalition of factions that compete for gov’t positions

Exporting Goods • Another economic miracle! • GDP (gross domestic product) continued to build year after year • Total value of all goods and services produced in a given year • First based on textiles, shifted to steel and machinery • 1970s – Cars, cameras, and televisions are heavily produced by Japan

  5. American Reaction • With the boom in Japanese exports, American producers became jealous • Saw the high-tariffed civilization as a threat • US pushed Japan to open up its economy to more exports
