The New Orleans metropolitan area had a population of 1,167,764 in 2010 and was the 46th largest in the UnitedStates. The city isnamedafter Orléans, a city located on the Loire River in Centre, France, and iswellknown for itsdistinct French Creole architecture, aswellasits cross-cultural and multilingualheritage. New Orleans isalsofamous for itscuisine, music (particularlyas the birthplace of jazz), and itsannualcelebrations and festivals, mostnotablyMardiGras. New Orleans wascatastrophicallyimpacted by HurricaneKatrina in 2005. Over 1,500 peopledied in Louisiana and some are stillunaccounted for.
