  3. Justice in practice

  4. Justice Scenario Nick is a 13 year old boy in Year 8 at a Victorian High School. He is in danger of failing the year due to a high absenteeism rate over the last six months. The basic facts are: Early in the year, the school had a free-dress day where students didn’t have to wear the uniform for a day in return for donating a gold coin to World Vision. Most of the kids wore their coolest clothes but Nick, not having enough money to keep up with the fashions, wore his uniform. One of the ‘cool’ boys, Alex, had a bit of a go at him, making a nasty comment along the lines of, “We should be donating our money to you.” From then on, Nick noticed that he was subtly excluded from lunchtime handball competitions, and that the boys he used to call friends would no longer talk to him. Nick eventually asked Emily, a mutual friend of Nick and Alex what was going on, and she told him that, “We’ve all decided that you’re boring. When you’re ready to have some real fun and stop making us feel bad for spending money, we’ll like you again..” Over a couple of months, their the silent treatment gradually turned into more overt bullying, with various nasty text messages and facebookcomments that left no doubt that Nick was considered a loser for being poor, uncool, and boring. How would the issue be tackled differently if justice was administered using at least 3 different approaches to justice (Retributive, Utilitarian, Distributive, Social, Restorative and Community)?
