Talk about money will strengthen and support God’s people • Talk about various aspects of the intersection of faith and finances • Personal finances and spending decisions are as much a part of Christian stewardship as giving to the church. • “Congregations need to address the concerns that keep people awake at night.” - Scott Cormode, “Making Spiritual Sense” p. 126

  4. How is it with you and money? • When you were growing up was money abundant or scarce? • When you were growing up how was money discussed in your family? • In your family now (however you define that) is money easily discussed? • How do you discuss and express generosity?

  5. Society’s Taboo – We don’t talk about money • A childhood story • A recent story • People bring this taboo with them to church

  6. The church’s taboo – Spiritual/business split • The conspiracy of silence – Loren Mead • The pastor on the spiritual side • Business leaders on the business side • Money talk is always about the “business” life of the congregation • Membership/Discipleship Continuum

  7. Reality #1 Financial houses in disarray • People who know their financial support of the congregation is awful have lots to lose if money is talked about openly and honestly • People who try to use money to bully

  8. Reality #2 - Pastors who don’t want open and honest money talk • The pastor’s financial house is in disarray • The pastor’s money bind – Loren Mead • Fear that money talk will drive potential members away

Some practical applications • What should the pastor know about what people give? • What should the people know about what the pastor gives? • How involved should the pastor be in the financial life of the congregation? • How much of what happens in your congregation around money is really about power and control?
