  3. What is a Docent? • Facilitator • Teacher • Guide • Student • Creator • Conversationalist • Ambassador • Leader • Team Player

  4. Do I need to… • Have a background in art history? • Have experience teaching? • Have given tours at another museum? • Have already been volunteering at the Blanton?

  5. Docents… • Are interested in learning about new things • Enjoy meeting new people • Are friendly and welcoming • Enjoy collaborating with others

  6. Stephanie’s Main Role • Staff advocate and liaison to staff, first point of contact • Organize trainings, secure speakers for training • Observe tours, give constructive feedback • Develop tours for K-12, university, and adult audiences • Give tours • Troubleshoot docent relations, tour issues, etc.

  7. Responsibilities Training and Touring • New docent training (Thursday evenings and on some Monday evenings August 2009-June 2010) • Complete homework, tour observations, readings, etc assigned by staff • Give interactive, engaging tours one day a week, a.m. or p.m., as an active docent • Find substitutes if cannot make a tour or will be out of town. • Act as an ambassador for the Blanton Museum of Art • Become a member of the Blanton Museum of Art

  8. Weekly Training Includes… Discussions about • Blanton collection • Art history • Education theory • Museum education • Presentation skills • Historical and cultural context of artworks

  9. Communication • Website for docents that includes wall labels, training schedules, research from docents • Docents are required to have an e-mail address because most communication via email

  10. Break Down of Time*On average, as an active docent, you can expect to spend: • Three trainings a month, two hours each (6 hours) • One tour a week, four weeks (4 hours) • Thirty minute prep time, thirty minute post time per tour (4 hours) TOTAL HOURS = 14 hours a month *Note: as a new docent, you may spend more time training, observing, and preparing to give tours.

  11. Rewards of Being a Docent • Strong community involvement, giving back • Sharing love of art and education with people of all ages • Lifelong friendships and connections with others who like art • Training from curators, other experts • Sneak peeks at exhibitions

  12. What Happens Next? • Application to me by June 13, 2009 • Group Interview completed by June 27, 2009 • Invitation from me by July 8, 2009 • Training begins on August 6, 2009 at 6 pm
